Wow ...

Looking at numerous responses here, it's clear to me that a lot of people here don't like the realities of the world that we live in.  I'd imagine many of you are young.  I remember when I was younger how I ignored the signs that Sega as a hardware company was in serious trouble.  And then, one fateful day, I pulled up Gamespot on my PC and saw this.  I was at a complete and utter loss.  Devasted.  Sick to my stomach.  Why?  Because I was unprepared for what all of the signs said could happen when it actually did.

You guys can immaturely attack the OP or other posters here all you want for simply sharing what economic experts and analysts have said, but it doesn't change the reality of the situation.  YOU need to prepare for the possibility that the Sony of the not-too-distant future may be very different than the Sony you love right now.  The economic problems of this world are great and many, and it's foolish to think that everything is going to just work itself out and be better.  Don't live in denial.  Be prepared for what could happen so you're not left at a complete and utter loss, devasted and sick to your stomach.

Because it's clear that for a lot of you, when it comes to the possible future, {click here}.

you think Sony is going to end up like sega......ok that I'll laugh at

look, NO-ONE is saying Sony doesn't have tough times ahead, and no one is saying they don't need to do anything about this, but the pretending like this is the end of the world *see sensationalist thread title for proof* from literally, the SAME people (you being apart of that crowd) gets annoying after awhile, especially as been said before, hardly anything comes from this

You're doing it too.  Stop responding emotionally and actually read what I said with your brain.  I never ONCE said that Sony is going to end up like Sega.  Not once.

What I'm talking about is this prevalent thinking among some here that think this will all work itself out and everything will be fine.  I was the same ignorant way back when the Sega news took the breath out of me and I'm trying to warn people not live in the same type of la-la land that young Darth Tigris was.  These are REAL problems and the economic problems that we're seeing in the countries that have driven Sony's success cannot be ignored as well.  Heck, things may get so bad that you'll be more concerned about your family eating than what's going on with these giant companies that really don't care about you.

Emotionally, you see a sensational headline.  Intellectually, I see a statement of fact.  While it may not necessarily be a harbinger of doom for Sony, it's should be a heads up to Sony fans that things are not good and some serious changes will likely be necessary if they are to get better.  You have no control of those changes and the possibility remains that those changes will alter Sony in a way that may hurt your feelings...

google implication

@ bold NO Sony fan doesn't already know this, what is continuously shocking news for you guys is a no shit Sherlock for the rest of us (hence the responses)

and at the last part, the very hopes and dreams of the people I'm talking about (you again being apart of that group) forgive me if I won't hold my breath

Windows phone is a joke atm. Check out the latest headline, android devices sold like 60. some million units in Q3 and its marketshare doubled from 25% to a whopping 52%.

http://gamrfeed.vgchartz.com/story/88474/android-accounts-for-majority-of-smartphone-sales-in-q3/

Compare that to 2.2 to 1.7 million decrease YoY for WP.

The only thing Microsoft is doing well in the phone space is leaching off profits from Google's successful Android platform.

I have seen this posted elsewhere, but it really isnt possible. Windows Phone did not release until November 8th 2010. What am I missing? The 1st measurement for YoY will be end of this quarter (12/31/2011).

I guess it's a bit like 1st week sales for a new game, but the game launches on a wednesday. The week is trimmed so the data is a little weak, but it's still 1st week data. I guess it's a bit the same thing for 1st-month sales here, but the worst part is that, instead of going up from 2.2 Million, it goes down with a full quarter in 2011. I'm pulling this out of my arse but I hope it helps explain a bit...

Actually looked into this more.  This for the quarter ending Sept 30th so the comparison is with Windows Mobile not even Windows Phone.  Like I said the 1st meaningful comparison will be this current quarter with next quarter even more important as all the new late 2011 early 2012 phones (Nokia phones in Europen in particular) are released.

Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

lol anyone find it odd how the guys that prefer xbox seem to be most interested in how sony is doing?

You post articles like these and still believe Sony is fucked somehow in the business department.

sorry?

Your whole tone is that Sony is sounding its death rattle and is going to need massive overhaul to stay alive, right?

You offered suggestions as to what to change but really, the only reason they are posting losses is because of the tsunami.

Well, it looks like Microsoft will be the only one left soon.

*this post is so embarrassing that I swear that it's a parody*

If Sony goes third party, they should develop exclusively for Nintendo platforms. That way Nintendo would become the definitive leader in gaming.

And why would that be in Sony's interest?

well i've already said what i'd do but Sony knows what to do they either haven't done it or can't do it. if the Japanese gov. could put a good 100billion behind Sony and other Japanese companies to cover there debt they may weather the storm, but Sony will have to cut cost regardless of how high end there tech is.

its not a matter of what Sony want. its about whats best for the company.

You came to that conclusion?

Exchange rate issues, the current economic situation and the sony business model of low margins are by far the biggest problem.

e.g.

In July, when the maker of Bravia televisions forecast full-year operating profit of 200 billion yen ($2.6 billion), Sony assumed the euro would trade at about 115 yen from July to March. The company loses about 6 billion yen of annual operating profit, or sales minus the cost of goods sold and administrative expenses, for every 1 yen decline against the euro, according to Mami Imada, a Sony spokeswoman

source Bloomberg.  by the way.... Euro is now 103. another significant drop since the last financials

"Sony expected an annual operating profit of at least $2 billion"

Tsunami hits:

"$3.1 billion lost"

"The Japanese electronics and entertainment conglomerate is now projecting a 90 billion yen loss ($1.2 billion)"

2 - 3.1 = -1.1billion.

Your currency against euro above: 6B yen per point. 12 points. 72B yen = 937 million

Thai floods = 320 million

2 billion minus 1.25 billion = .75B operating profit without the tsunami.

This is the smartest thing I've read in this thread so far. And this guy's not even an analyst.  Then again, the only real analyst on the website are ioi, Source, and Trunks.
