I'm guessing it's some ultra efficient codec similar to h.264 - heavy on encoding, but small file sizes (around 35-40MB for 1min of video @720p). Might not even be buffered to RAM, but to HDD.

I just know Fraps uncompressed files are huge.  Talking +35G's for my 1080p 30fps 10 min WoW videos, compressed tho we talkin barely 1 GB tho.

Yes they are, cause Fraps needs to encode in real time on CPU - and they are not very good at that. If you have dedicated hardware for real-time encoding, files we'll be much smaller, and you don't stress CPU.

I guess a  i7 920 @ 2.67 GHz isn't enough then cause if I try and push beyond 30 fps 1080p I get a noticeable drop in performance while playing.

My cell phone do that with 512MB RAM.... 1080p video record while I'm doing a videoconference call.

Its not while playing a game.

What I said my cell have dedicaded unit for video encoding/record... like every GPU have one too... that's easy and didn't use anything from the system... even the buffer in RAM is small because the video is already saved to HDD.

All the tasks you listed will not use 4GB of RAM... it's impossible.

It will be more than 1GB. But yeah probably not up to 4GB... that was just my theory in the other thread of why devs were currently locked to 4GB if Sony always planned on 8GB total.

If they code it properly I don't see how it can go over 2Gb, so I think ethomaz is right when he says 6Gb for games and 2Gb reserved for OS.

But you have to remember that sony needs to give themselves some breathing room with RAM for future OS additions and expansions.

2gb sounds quite reasonable. It'll probably use quite a bit less then that at launch, but 4yrs from now that 2gb may very well be put to full use.

I think totally the opposite... at first Sony will use ~1.5GB for all the OS tasks but in the end after otmizations the Sony will use less than 1GB for the same tasks and a little more. Sony will reserves at launch 2GB for the OS and 6GB for the games... in the future I can see 1GB for the OS and 7GB for the games.

MS did the same with 360 and Sony with PS3.

They will optimize the OS to give even more RAM to games.

Here is an interesting read about the PS4 hardware, tweeted by Yoshida. I decided to delete the translation since it was so big, go ahead and check out the site and translate yourself if you are interested. It isn't that exciting of info, goes off topic a lot.

Too bad that gibberish is not really of any help
It isn't even clear what of it is Yoshida and what of it is speculation by the writer..

Yeah, sorry. There is only a few decent parts and it is pretty long. Didn't realize how long until I posted it.
