Forums - General Discussion - Is the death penalty a good idea?

It`s not a good idea.
No one has the right to take a life. More, taking a life when there`s a chance that the person is indeed innocent is not something you can then take back.
There are ways to help that person change.

@OT,

The main thing is on whose side you are. If you support the victim in murder case then death penalty is the only option when the offence is proved.

But if you support the offender then you don't want the death penalty.

Look at those countries who abolished the death penalty whether the rate of offence punishment of which was once death penalty has been reduced or not and the answer is 'not'. That means the offender does not think twice before doing a serious offence. You are therefore enticing the crime in the society by abolishing the death penalty.

Death and killing not an answer for anything. I think it is far better punishment to be placed in jail. The problem is many jails are the rat infested crap holes we want them to be due to who know what manner of things (human right maybe), that is where we have to change things. If you abuse/deny/ take away someone else's 'human rights' then you should not be allowed any yourself. A long term punishment in jail is far worse then a quick and painless death.

Hmm, pie.

there are plenty of cases where there is absolutely no question about who did it, and the death penalty could be used without any concerns at all.

Not really, the chance of the convicted person being innocent is too high. Besides, killing someone ends their life,it doesn't make them pay for their crimes. They might have a short period of time where they think "oh shit, my life is coming to an end, this is it..." and then they're gone. I think serious crimes should get lifetime imprisonment, in bad facilities... then again I don't know how effective rehabilitation programmes actually are, so I could be wrong.

My dealings with the site http://yourdeathdate.info had ended in a nasty exchange with the site`s management. Just about half a year ago my girlfriend took a death-prediction test and found out that she had only about a month and a half left to live. When she had only a day left before the predicted date, she started showing clear signs of agitation and got into a car accident exactly on the predicted date. She survived accident, but the that was a real close call. We are now taking legal action again this site on our lawyer`s advice.

In concept it's fine if it is completely fair and accurate.

In practice no, because it can't be completely fair and accurate. There are too many factors - innocents being killed, racial bias in sentencing, the "lottery" factor (some receive the dp and others life for same crime),etc.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

Yes I think the death penalty should come back for serious and sick crimes.
I also think prisons need to get less "comfortable". I know a few people who have done long term and short term prison sentences and they all say that while they'd prefer to be free they don't mind prison life, going to the gym and tvs an consoles are there for them. In one case one guy actually preferred it in prison and constantly committed thievery to get put back inside.

Criminals should be scared of going to prison they should dread the idea of going inside and therefore it might deter them from committing crimes in the first place.
I'd give prisoners nothing, just the food and water they need and a couple of hours out of their cells to get some excercise of social time.

What are you talking about!? Look at these horrifying prison cells in Norway:

And look at how disgusting the facilities are!!

Lol, dude is that seriously a prison in Norway or am I just being gullible?? That would be crazy if true, it looks like a 5star hotel!

Yeah it's an actual prison xD. It's mostly for criminals with short sentences, so rapists/murderers etc. wouldn't be staying there. But still, that gymnasium is so much better than my schools! That kitchen is gorgeous. And the rooms are awesome, considering they are free -_-

In Austria prisons look pretty much the same - even for murderers etc. though we have Hochsicherheitsträkte (high security areas?) in which high risk criminals are put in... they look like normal prisons you would imagine when watching american movies... though I think prisoners don't get their own TV in Austria - they have to share one... and no consoles or anything like that - furthermore the things they own are governed by the state, like if a person owning a house goes to prison, the government gets the rents earned while the criminal is in prison. In Austria there are some poor people offending the law so that they have to stay in prison during winter. Criminals who haven't done a major crime are allowed to go outside and do whatever day want - well with time restrictions - also Prisoners have to work in Austria (e.g. in the kitchen of a courthouse)...
