Forums - Sony Discussion - What Will Happen With PlayStation 4 Next Generation?

After Microsft releases their next system, and Nintendo releases the Wii U, there will only be a limited time where the PS3 is viable as a platform for game development. Essentially, third party publishers need to release their games to the PS3, XBox 360 and PC to get the sales to justify the high development costs of these games. While developers will continue to support the HD consoles until the next generation platforms are well established, if the Wii U and Next XBox have similar enough performance and developers can target the PC at the same time within 12 to 18 months developers may be able to target 50+ Million gamers on next-generation consoles; and with the userbase of current generation consoles falling, developers would rapidly be moving away from these platforms.

Nov 2013 PS4 launch in Japan. March 2014 for the rest of the world. So yeah, in effect for the world outside of Japan 2014 is the launch year for PS4.

I think GT6 launching late 2014 would be a good move for PS4's first WW holiday.

hmm.. im not sure if you're trying to be funny or not lol

No, I really think so! Right now Sony is not in a position to launch two years after next gen starts since they need to recover their install base from the PS2 era. About GT6, It probably wouldn't sell that well on PS4 as it could on PS3 because of the new and small install base from PS4, but it would make perfect sense to hold it for PS4 because it would make a great system seller.

-_-!

..you guys are killing me with this 2014 sh!t..

let's say that these developers do move away from the hd consoles

ps3 will still have the Vita keeping it alive for A LONG time because soon many PSVita games will be shared with ps3 with that cross platform play thing or whatever it's called

AND

the Wii U technology wont be that much bigger than ps3's. you can even see that all Wii U will be getting are ps3 and 360 games/slightly upgraded ports so when the new generation kicks this 1 out the door ps3 could also still be filled with life because it wouldn't take much time to make a Wii U game for the ps3 :)

ps3 isn't going anywhere anytime soon next gen ;)

yea i see what you are saying but here is the thing

ps2 sorta kinda had the same problem it's 1st year(small install base)

Sony could just ride out the year with some other games until ps4's 1st holiday(excluding it being launched in the holiday's) like they did with the ps2. Then they could release GT6 around that time. Now being that ps4 would have had some time to gather some sales GT6 would be able to open with BIG numbers(like gt3 did on ps2) while also boosting the hell out of ps4's sales

it's kinda the same with what happened with the ps2 it's 1st year but ps2 also had Grand Theft Auto 3 it's 1st Holiday season

being that it would be so early in it's life cycle Sony could just bundle GT6 with the ps4 just like they did with GT3 on the ps2

they could bundle GT6 to 14 million like they did with GT3 if im not mistaken and that way we would already have a GT on PS4 early on in the generation and Polyphony could just make a GT7 later on in that generation like they did with GT2 on ps1 and GT4 on ps2. it's a lot better than waiting  2-3 years after ps4's launch for GT6 to release

but i only see this working if Sony is able to launch the PlayStation 4 at $400

Itll lose out big time to the Xbox. Look how much Xbox has grown this gen, its sales have already doubled over the last console whereas PS3 is a third of the PS2, its dominated the PS3 in US easily and not just hardware its won out in software aswell, both in exlclusives and multiplatform.

It even leads in UK, i didnt know anyone who had an Xbox here and everyone had a PS2, look how fast that changed.

Next gen the gap between Xbox and PS3 will grow wider, nobodys that bothered with Japanese games anymore its all shooters, PS3 did well because of those that were loyal to the PS brand and people who expected things like GTA and FF to only come to PS3, but i barely kept anything.

Xbox will own PS4 in US and UK, the rest of Europe will turn over to Xbox like UK and with Japan turning towards portable consoles instead, PS4 wont stand a chance.

I have doubts that the PS-Vita will do for the PS3 what the PSP didn't do for the Wii ... Whether they have similar processing power capabilities or not, developers don't (seem to) treat handheld systems and portable systems in the same way; and tend not to release the same games for both platforms.

Beyond that, we really don't know much about what the Wii U is but the rumoured base hardware has been demonstrated to be (roughly) 4 times as graphically powerful as the PS3 on the PC. Typically, with the reduction in overhead and with developers targeting specific hardware, console hardware generally performs significantly better than the same hardware in the PC; and it is highly likely that Nintendo has modified the hardware to reduce bottlenecks and improve real-world performace. Overall, I would be surprised if the Wii U is not as far ahead of the PS3 as the PS3 was above the Wii; and I suspect that third party publishers will be able to target it along side other next-generation consoles (possibly with minor downgrades).

Next gen is going to be very different from this one or any previous gen before. Ecosystems from various platforms will start to merge. I see Sony teaming up with Google for PS4 in providing a Android experience on a home console...

i dont think so!

you are giving xbox too much credit

it does not matter how much the xbox has "grown" this gen the funny thing is that when ps3 takes the 360 it will be in 3rd place

do you understand what im telling you joker? when 360 hits 3rd place it will mean that it will end even WORSE than it did last generation despite all of it's "growth"

PS2 launched 1st last gen(excluding dreamcast) and completely DESTROYED it's competition(aka Microsoft's Xbox and Nintendo's Gamecube). Though Xbox was able to beat the Gamecube

Xbox 360 launched 1st this gen and got hawked down by Nintendo's Wii and will be behind PlayStation 3 probably by the end of this holiday if Kinect doesn't come and save it's a** again like it did last year(unlikely)

so 360 got exclusive games from 3rd parties that originally were on playstation, they secured most of ps3's exclusive games and made them multiplat, they made deals that got many games to release a year earlier on it's console and the same with xbl games coming out 1st before psn and virtually every game ran alot better on the 360 over ps3 and it is STILL about to end worse than it did last generation

not to mention Sony was holding themselve's back with dumb decision's that i dont even have to name(inferior online, high a** price, making ps3 too hard to develop for etc etc)

and most of the 360 exclusive's went multiplatform(kinda like ps3 but 360 cant afford to have the games go multiplat)

cliffy b was basically saying that the next gears would also appear on a playstation(it was here on vgchartz when epic's other game came out on the same day as killzone 3), valve has basically gone multiplatform now so left 4 dead will most likely be playstation bound as well, mass effect has went to playstation, hell Halo wont even be made by the same developer anymore *lifts shoulders*

and Sony has finally started being more competitive as of recently so i mean what can microsoft possibly do next gen? xbox mainly got this far because of Sony's incompetence near the beginning of the generation

but let me stop right here because i think i typed a little too much on this 1 comment :)
