Pretty crazy huh? Now the question I have is howmany of those were bought for gaming, Blu-ray or both? The public is being told that the PS3 is the best Blu-ray player you can buy. I think it’s important to note who’s using it for movies and who’s using it for games. Here’s the full release from Sony:

Sony Computer Entertainment America Announces PlayStation(R) Hardware Sales
Exceeding 3.9 Million During Holiday Sales Window

1.2 Million Consumers Join PLAYSTATION(R)3 (PS3(TM)) Family since Black Friday

FOSTER CITY, Calif., Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ — Sony Computer Entertainment
America (SCEA) today announced PlayStation(R) hardware retail sales reached
more than 3.9 million units in North America during the critical holiday sales
window (Friday, November 23, 2007 to December 31, 2007). This accounts for
SCEA’s three systems currently in the market PLAYSTATION(R)3 (PS3(TM)), PSP(R)
(PlayStation(R)Portable) and PlayStation(R)2 (PS2). PS3 retail sales reached
1.2 million hardware units during this holiday timeframe.

“The PlayStation brand ended the year in a very strong position and
clearly indicates more positive momentum going into 2008. We are
particularly pleased to have sold through 1.2 million units of PS3 during the
holiday selling season,” said Jack Tretton, president and CEO, SCEA. “The
strong PS3 sales also further establish Blu-ray’s dominant position as the
high-definition medium of choice for games and movies. Consumers are clearly
responding to the expanding multimedia capabilities and a great line-up of
over 200 games.”
Sales of PSP reached 1.4 million units during this same timeframe. The
success of the recently introduced Daxter(TM) PSP(R) Entertainment Pack and
Star Wars Battlefront(R) PSP Entertainment Pack have continued to swell the
PSP install base. Upcoming platform defining software such as God of War(R):
Chains of Olympus and Final Fantasy: Crisis Core will further increase PSP
momentum in 2008.
PS2 sales exceeded 1.3 million units during its eighth holiday season.
The industry’s most successful platform is poised for another great year in
2008 with the continued success of the critically-acclaimed Buzz(TM) and
SingStar(R) franchises.

This is probably shipped to retail, not sold to customer. Still impressive though.

PS3 has gained tons of momentum since the price cut. All Sony has to do is capitalize on the games this year. Which with the titles scedueled to drop this year, seems very likely.

Pretty crazy huh?

Didn't Nintendo sell more than 1.2 million Wiis in a single week this holiday season?

Around the Network

Those numbers are impressive. Now that the holiday season is over can the PS3 keep selling? That is a question only time will answer. The 360 sales have been steady in two years, while Wii sales have been amazing to say the least. Sony has to at least get good Week-to-Week numbers. They can't have the fluctuation they had last year where one week they'd sell 250,000 units then the next three week sell 75,000 a week.

Note these are America only numbers.

Now Playing: Crysis 2

Last Finished: BulletStorm

Online IDs: PSN: computermaximus, XBL: computermaximus

so since november 18 till december 31 - 860k.
you can remove 4 days, that would be atleast 60k.

then, if arcticle is true, there should be 400k added to ps3 in usa. =)

Then 9 mln. for the end 2007. Hooray! =]

Every 5 seconds on earth one child dies from hunger...

2009.04.30 - PS3 will OUTSELL x360 atleast by the middle of 2010. Japan+Europe > NA.

Gran Turismo 3 - 1,06 mln. in 3 weeks with around 4 mln. PS2 on the launch.
Gran Turismo 4 - 1,16 mln. with 18 mln. PS2 on the launch.

Final Fantasy X - around 2 mln. with 5 mln. PS2 on the launch.
Final Fantasy X-2 - 2.4 mln. with 12 mln. PS2 on the launch.

1.8 mln. PS3 today(2008.01.17) in Japan. Now(2009.04.30) 3.16 mln. PS3 were sold in Japan.
PS3 will reach 4 mln. in Japan by the end of 2009 with average weekly sales 25k.

PS3 may reach 5 mln. in Japan by the end of 2009 with average weekly sales 50k.

Yeah, I said that we wouldn't see the real effect of the PS3's price reduction until this year; we will have to compare the PS3's sales in January and Febuary 2007/2008 to see how big of an impact it really had.

I wonder how many they sold to retail last quarter... I'm expecting them to report 5.5m to 6m. With the 2m they sold in the last 2 quarters it puts them at 7.7m to 8m.. Still more than 3m away from their estimated 11m sales for the fiscal year.

If they sell at least 2m next quarter they can get close to 10m and not disappoint their investors too much... But first we need to wait for thei 3Q earnings report. I'm so curious how it will turn out.

Optimistic predictions for 2008 (Feb 5 2008): Wii = 20M, PS3 = 14M, X360 = 9.5M

You're confusing momentum with holiday season shopping...

PS3 sales in NA are still lackluster. This holiday would of been a disaster if it wasn't for Europes strong sales.
