Yes. The year has five seasons.

On what planet?

Earth.

The year has 4 seasons on planet Earth (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter) in temperate and subpolar regions, though ecologists sometimes use a 6 season model for some temperate areas (pre-spring and late summer). Other regions have 2 seasons, or just 1 season all year long. No region has 5 seasons.

Oh really? Then why do websites run news stories that the fifth season just started?

Are you expecting me to understand that explosion of letters?

Fünfte Jahreszeit = fifth season. That's all you need to know, the rest you can figure.

The article was talking something about carnival season.

The carnival session begins each year on 11 November at 11:11 a.m. and finishes on Ash Wednesday with the main festivities happening around Rosenmontag; this time is also called the "Fifth Season."

This is a good thread that is well written and misunderstood. It didn't get nearly enough replies.

Too bad I didn't stumble upon it until 11/12/11.

How dare you defile this thread by posting only on 11/12/11! :P

Fine.  I'll also post in this thread on 11/13/11.
