Forums - Gaming Discussion - New stats show Mobile gaming is slaughtering handheld consoles!

Please excuse my lack of understanding regarding this topic, but why don't the big game companies like nintendo just release android and iphone apps???
For eaxmple, I am playing this game Labyrinth of the Goblin, and it totally reminds me of D for Playstation.

I find it annoying to carry around my DS and phone, so if I could play them on my phone, it would be the best thing ever!

Even releasing old title is good enough....

I think the people holding on to console handhelds are going to be in for a rude awakening over the next few years.

Or nintendo should make a DS phone?

2010 and 2011 have seen final stages of Nintendo DS and PSP collapse in software sales while 3DS didn't help situation much due to lack of software.

2012 and 2013 should be much much different with Nintendo big guns finally ready and PSV released.

you have to think about the millions of Apps that are free.....key word FREE !!!!

Quality wise they aren't better than flash games. They will never compete with real handheld games like Sony and Nintendo can offer.
Casual gamers may buy the phone games, but any gamer who cares at least a bit about quality will always prefer real handhelds.

updated: 14.01.2012

playing right now: Xenoblade Chronicles

Hype-o-meter, from least to most hyped:  the Last Story, Twisted Metal, Mass Effect 3, Final Fantasy XIII-2, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Playstation ViTA

bet with Mordred11 that Rage will look better on Xbox 360.

I assume you haven't played any of the serious efforts on a mobile, have you? There are a lot of games that are directly comparable to decent efforts on PSP and DS - usually at a fraction of the price. Zenonia is a pretty old stand-by and was a pretty amazing game.

If consumers weren't demanding DS and PSP like experiences, then the publishers wouldn't be offering direct ports from their library such as GTA: Chinatown Wars, Final Fantasy III and so on.

Well for a long time Nintendo and Sony have talked about the threat that mobile gaming poses to their ability to survive and keep their gaming dedicated handheld platforms on the market. Yet many users here on VGChartz have stated mobile gaming is not a threat at all to Nintendo or Sony siting lack of evidence to suggest that they are not.

Well recent research shows that mobile gaming is indeed killing Nintendo and Sony, I'm not talking a gradual slow death I am talking an all out slaughter. Analytics firm Flurry released their annual report on mobile and handheld console gaming based on both Flurry's research and NPD sales information. Their report is damning and painting a very bad picture for the survival of Nintendo and Sony's handheld operations in the United States.

According to Flurry's research "iOS and Android games have tripled their market share from roughly 20% in 2009 to nearly 60% in just two years. Simultaneously, Nintendo, the once dominant player, has been crushed down to owning about one-third of market in 2011, from having controlled more than two-thirds in 2009. Combined, iOS and Android game revenue delivered $500 million, $800 million and $1.9 billion over 2009, 2010 and 2011, respectively."

Flurry has a warning for Nintendo, if they do not adapt to the mobile markets increasing dominance by making the jump to cell phones or creating a handheld platform that offers services capable of competing with Smart Phones they could face a "Nokia-like" decision. Either adapt to the competitors or watch as their market share continues to erode until the business of handheld gaming platforms is no longer existent.

Personally I think Nintendo has a good chance of surviving in the future. Though I do agree they will need to adapt to compete with the competition or lose market share and profit margins steadily in the future. Though I wouldn't agree with the idea that handheld consoles will be completely eradicated as long as Nintendo's first party software remains exclusive to Nintendo's handheld hardware. But Nintendo's ability to bring in DS level profits and dominate the handheld industry might be over.

What do you think about this latest data? Do you think Mobile will kill handheld game dedicated platforms from Sony and Nintendo? Or can both live side by side in harmony?

That data is a weak argument.

1) PSP and DS ARE AGEING and it's friggin' OBVIOUS that the software sales will decrease.

2) Just because mobile gaming is growing FASTER than handheld gaming doesn't mean it's threatining handheld gaming. Even thePSP (which some are so stupid to say failed) sells over 100k units every week. Come on man, do people have brains left anymore?

3) Even if 3DS and PSV do not match the sales of their predecessors, then saying ''handheld gaming being killed by mobiles'' is STILL idiotic. If they are profitable and successful in their own right then it means there are people who will always invest in dedicated portable consoles.

So, in conclusion;

- You could've quoted better statistics to make your point.

- Even if you did then the conclusion would still be unfounded.

I get you point but I would still rather play what I consider games, like Mario and Zelda over crappy mobile phone games any day.
