Forums - Sony Discussion - The XBox looks like it would go the way of HDDVD

If bly-ray wins the PS3 will get a boost in sales and possible get a software boost. My uncle is getting a PS3 for blu-ray only since he doesn't play games. I will buy GT5, FF XIII and VS, and maybe others since he bought a PS3 so it might sell some software thanks to blu-ray winning as well. But this in no way means that the 360 is out, it still is selling well in NA and the PS3 is failing in NA so it is up for grabs.

Some Thoughts From The Handsome Jerry:

WoofMorning to you VGChartz!
I just came here to say that I'm proud of what my owner darthdevidem01 has done with this thread, I was a puppy when Gran Turismo 4 came out. I loved the graphics and used to grrrrr every time my owner lost, which was never! I used to bark in glee and joy every time my owner won a race, which was 100 times in dog wins! GT5 will be the best racing game ever WOOF!
From Darth's Dog, Jerry!

Last Words From Darthdevidem01:

Its been a pleasure creating this official thread. Its my first one, so it may not be of top quality, but I have put hard work & passion into it. The journey was tough and spanned over 4 days, it was hard to not have any CAPS in the thread too, but in the end I am pleased with the final product. Most of all its been an honour to make the Official Thread for Gran Turismo 5, a game which defines the word perfection, a racing experience that will inspire generations to come!

Hold on one second before jumping all over the op's statement...it was a little harsh but those were all solid facts people...

The xbox brand has had it's first ever successful back-to-back software "year"...Gears, Bioshock, Halo, Mass Effect..all great games. Now all Sony had to do in order to begin outselling x360..was lower the price of it's machine to $399.

According to internet extremists.."ps3 has no games"..well what I see is Playstation brand power alone, crushing four of 360's bigest aaa hits. THAT alone is a bad sign for ms..

Sony has tons of creed with the brand - and they have touted it as the cheapiest BR player on the market. Those two elements, and a new sku at $399 made the holidays awesome for Sony. However, they are still taking big losses on every PS3 they sell, and yeah, it's still leading in weekly sales, but just wait until mid spring to see if that trend keeps up. If I were in a race, and a competitor was hitting faster times than me, would I really care? Nah ... because I am in the lead.

MS has dropped the price of the 360 down $50 in its 2-year lifespan. Just once. Sony? In a year, it's had 2 price cuts, 4 different skus, 2 deleted skus JUST to keep it competitive.

And for most folks, there's no compelling reason to jump to BR even in light of the Warner announcement. It's better than DVD, but not by much.

Blu Ray *winning* will have some folks moving into the HD arena, but not as many as you think. When folks don't know the difference between an HDTV, HDMI and HD DVD,  you have some problems ...

BluRay succeeded in large part because Sony tethered it to the PS3, giving it a quick and easy way to expand the user base.

HDDVD failed in part because MS refused to do the same thing.

HOWEVER...

PS3 has struggled BECAUSE it tied itself to BluRay, raising prices well beyond consumer demand.

And the 360, being independent of HDDVD, will be able to survive it's demise with no problem.

Microsoft is hedging their bets more on digital distribution anyways. They talk quite a bit about Xbox Live every now and then

just throwing this out there, but they are going to do blu ray support--so...yeah

Think about it, if you buy the PS3 for games, there are people who buy the PS3 for its blu-ray capabilities. now that bluray is winnong, the number of people buying the ps3 will increase. With time, sony will make money off the ps3. dont you guys know anything about console sales? at first no profit, as time goes by software sales make up for it and hardware production costs decrease. xbox360 is at its peak. a whole year by itself, a whole year headstart, biggest software out. ps3 is just starting out, it had a horrible start, few if any worthy games yet its still killing the 360. if its doing that now, just imagine what it will do when its big sellers and established franchises like GT, FF, and MGS come out. Wii can coexist. the 360 is not a bad console at all but we have to face the fact that they cannot help but come out last in this generations console war even if they had a years head start.

1. Blu Ray has been winning for over a year. It has not helped PS3 much.

2. PS3 is edging out the 360, not "killing it". And that's after 2 price cuts, when the 360 has had one, and a relatively minor one at that. It now has a good deal of room to cut prices itself, and that will almost certainly drive sales up.

3. Do some math. Even under best case scenarios, the PS3 could not catch the 360 until 2009 at the earliest, and that's with zero competition in the East. MS has already assured the 360 a better showing this generation than last, while the PS3 is almost guaranteed be seen as a disappointing follow up to the PS2.

4. The average consumer doesn't care about BluRay. Those that do are generally tech heads who, if they care about games, will own multiple consoles. DVD was a fluke - the right technology at the right time which showed historically unprecedented success. The PS2 was able to ride the DVD tidal wave. Unfortunately for the PS3, BluRay's wave is much smaller.

Seriously, with Blu-ray  getting new backers i dont just see how HDDVD will survive. To add to that, the PS3 has a builtin bluray player. this smells like success for sony. just look t those xbox numbers. A year head start, all its killer apps out, cheaper than the PS3. yet its still getting killed. Seriously microsoft, give it up. you cant do this. By the way, whats with the altered numbers for PS3 sales in the US?

lol in usa the 360 kills ps3

Getting killed, you say?

While I realize that this is the SONY forum and that there are some here who froth for such sentiment, the success of blu-ray does not grant the PS3 an automatic victory. I think not - mind you that I own a PS3 and do not own a 360.

"Killed" is also a relative term, as the PS3 is only slightly over the sales curve of the 360 with aligmed time frames. Microsoft is not out of the game yet, and those who think so are underestimating Gates and company. Halo 3 is not the only game Microsoft had, nor will it be the last or best for the 360. Add the potential for more price cuts - which Sony will not easily be able to match - and 360 is far from dead.

There are plenty of games coming out for all systems that make them worth owning. I own a PS3 and I will own a Wii - but not till I can find one with no effort for retail price. As for the 360, who knows, anything is possible, but they will succeed over last generation (XBOX) and it will be a close race.

EDIT: Wow, in the coarse of me typing up my reply - 4 other people beat me, and when did Wii come into this?

Can we trade this Crazymann for the other?  I like this guy much better.

MS said they *could* do it if the consumers wanted it. However, what's the attach rate for the HD DVD? Rarely do  add-ons ever do good business for console makers (Sega CD, Sega 32X). MS laid out their gameplan - and it's IPTV.
