Forums - General Discussion - Best Buy Europe goes under!

sad face

Well, I'm European and I never heard of Best Buy, so I'm not surprised.

Anyway, we have a ton of videogame stores that have long been here, so breaking into the market has to be difficult, I don't know what Best Buy could do better than other stores to attract people.

No troll is too much for me to handle. I rehabilitate trolls, I train people. I am the Troll Whisperer.

I hate Best Buy and I wish they went under vs Circuit City. CC had far better programs, warranty, and customer service. Prices were always pretty much the same...

I try to utilize Walmart, Amazon, NewEgg, and Costco well before I consider Best Buy.

I've been living in London since january and was living in France before. Best Buy is actually the only electronics shop where I bought something here, as there are so few electronics shops in the UK and they're all overpriced and there's zero competition between them since they're all owned by the same group. Best Buy actually had good deals and I got my AV receiver 30% cheaper than it was at Currys/PC World/Dixons and Comet. Plus their services are pretty good compared to the others. It's really a shame they are closing, since even online there's not so much available options here in the UK. I guess I'll go back to importing stuff from german and french websites.

They need to figure out how the American prices for electronic goods can be so low there and do that here!

uuhh.. Taxes? Underpaid, untrained employees? Lack of social benefits? You really want that in Europe?

And can we please change the title? Or is UK now suddenly Europe?

Mainland Europe's largest chain is the MediaGroup (MediaMarkt,Saturn, etc). They never tried going to GB for a good reason, apparently.

I think Media Markt/Saturn has a good grip on mainland Europe.. big stores and good prices...

I am not surprised at all. Actually I am surprised that they even tried.

Europe is full with british french and german chains. Everywhere I go I read the same names. Be it food, electronics or DIY markets. Walmart failed miserably in Germany. I shopped in a few and my impression was: It had the flair of Aldi, Lidl but the prices of a better shop. It was simply WAY to expensive for what it offered.

Best Buy would fail in mainland Europe because Media Markt, Saturn are there and they dont go to UK so it seems UK is very competitive. Europe is pretty much done doubt you will get a foothold here unless you offer something different.

The 4 biggest retailer chains in the world:

1: Walmart (American)
2: Carrefour (French)
3: Metro (German)
4: Tesco (British)

So 3 of the 4 biggest retail chains are european and they control Europe. Walmart cant compete and thats the Number 1. Nobody else can have significant success in Europe unless you have something noone else does. Competing directly is useless imo.

what's a best buy? why would it matter?

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

Yes, please.

The title is fine. The division in BB was called Best Buy Europe. While they only operated in the UK, at first, they did plan on extending across Europe. They failed before they got there.

Whatever reason they haven't come here, it's not because we have a highly competitive market. We have a couple of firms, but it's more of a monopoly situation. That's probably why they didn't enter.

im not surprised! last week i bought a new 250 gb xbox 360 and a new halo reach collectors edition, all for only £165. which is well over £80 cheaper than anywhere else in the uk. they were probably making a loss on my purchase!
