Well it would appear that Sega is drawing the line with Generations it is a one time thing. Everyone knows that to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog Sega is bringing us Sonic Generations for most of the current generation consoles. Sonic Generations features a return of many classic levels from many of Sonic's most beloved games. Pre-orders are record breaking and Sega expects to sell a shit load of copies. Yet Sega is clear and says it does not intend to make future classic Sonic games!
Sega European brand manager David Corless says"Do you know what? There are no plans, to be brutally honest, to bring Classic Sonic back," he goes on to say that he isn't going to say one won't come specifically saying "The reason for bringing him back for this game was because this is a celebration of 20 years of Sonic. It was a real fitting time to do it. He’s really well loved. Let’s see how Generations does. You can never say never in this industry, but at the moment there are no plans."
This runs sort of contradictory to recent releases like Sonic 4. Also what does Sega define as classic Sonic? Are they referring to 2D Sonic? I mean when people talk classic Mario they are referring to his 2 Dimensional classics. If that is the case Sonic Colours screams the return of classic Sonic.
What do you think will we see a Sonic 5 or another classic Sonic game anytime soon? Or is Sega actually going to stick with newer Sonic and not return to the old formula of side scrolling platformer? Will we see the classic levels of Sonic return in future games or is Sega really burying Sonic's past in the hopes of a bright future? Do you want a full return of classic Sonic or do you prefer the DreamCast onwards Sonic?
