People shouldn't have to hide their sexuality just because other people have a problem with it.

I'm glad that charges are being pursued - that was a pretty damned severe assault and the kid deserves a harsher punishment than three days suspension for it.

Great , but if he wants to stay out of trouble he should keep his mouth shut. Being gay is not ok is an opinion that majority of people share, especially in his age group, and he should respect it.

Why should he respect other peoples bigotry? They're the ones with the problem, not him.

Well, hes the one that got beaten, and mommy wont be there all the time to watch out for him, so it would be best for him to keep his gayness to himself if he doesn't want to get beaten again

Ah I see how that works. So if a catholic kid is beaten up by a non-religious bully or a believer of any other religion, then it's his fault for being catholic and expressing it so he'd better just shut up about it.

I really do hope you never have a gay kid yourself.

Its not its fault for anything, but if he wants to avoid further beatings he should stay quiet about being catholic, yes, andaround the people and environment that hates catholics, but that's a very shallow example since gayness really isnt much tolerated in the world, catholicism is, i never heard about catholics being persecuted in todays world.

As for your last sentence, I hope so too lol :D

My point is kids shouldn't be forbidden to express whatever they want to express. They're kids and if you're start repressing the youth then that's a really fucked up way to look at the world.

Actually homosexuals are starting to get much more toleration around the world, especially on European countries. It's only in the countries with a lot of religious intolerance that their situation hardly improves, but that's bound to change anytime soon, whether you like it or not.

My last sentence was more of a pity sentence for the potential kid, rather than you. Though I admit, I do find it curious if a person like you does have a gay kid since I like to see real life cases of people having to eat their own words xD.

I dont think this is right, But Why put your gayness out there like that?
People needs to understand that not many people take kindly to it

This. The kid should have hold his mouth shut, especially if he knew that his sexuality would get him in trouble

No, homophobia shouldn't be respected, or even tolerated. And homophobes should respect the law, as it's illegal to physically assault someone.

what happens in this state if you bully someone for some other reason other than sexual orientation?

Obviously you'd get more than a 3 day suspension. It was premeditated violent assault after all.

You know this for a fact?

if true then clearly this punishment is riduculous.

However, if this is in line with other bullying punishments at this school then the fact that it is gay bullying doesnt make it worse than say race bullying or bullying someone because they have a big nose.

Bullying is just as horrendous for the victim regardless of the motive.

This punishment is ridiculous regardless, considering that the bully commited a criminal offence (physical assault), and also a hate crime (he assaulted the victim for being gay). Bullying is too broad of a term as just teasing isn't illegal and it woudl be pretty hard to punish that. However, if you don't properly punish bullies when they commit actual violent criminal acts, then how do you expect to stop bullying?

I'm intruiged, what constitues a hate crime? Surely the boy could have been picked on for an infinite list of reasons but when does this become a hate crime?

Once the media found out he was gay this became a hate crime. Just like the flash mobs in Philly wasnt a hate crime cause it was black on white. Only when the majority attacks a minority is when its considered a hate crime. What a country.

No, it became a hate crime the moment the bully beat the gay kid up for being gay.

They shouldn't, but they are. This world isnt ideal. My point is, if you want to avoid getting beaten, stop showing off your gayness. That, or beat everyone up who goes against you. However, since this kid is probably very feminine, that's not an option. If your a jew, and you live in a ghetto full of skinheads and neo nazis, you should probably stay quiet about your beliefs. And if your a fudgepacker like the kid, and your surrounded by people who hate your sexuality, its best for you to lay low. Its only a smart thing to do to survive

As for ur last sentence, do you find other peoples misfortunes funny?

Thing is, I don't accept those kind of conformities. Had the entirity of humanity use the same line of reasoning, we'd still be in the dark ages of tolerance. People need to learn about tolerance, not just "hey let's segregate everyone and whomever doesn't accept that we beat the shit out of them".

And no, I don't find other people's misfortunes funny, though what I do find funny is you considering that having a gay kid is a misfortune. Me, I think that would be an excellent life lesson.

This has nothing to do with humanity, just with what some people are like. And even if we advance in tolerance to the point of complete anarchy, there will always be some people who hate your sexuality, race or nationality. If your unfortunate enough to be living with them, best to keep your mouth shut if you want to avoid getting beaten, especially if your queer, which aren't very tolerated especially the open feminine ones in the world . (And by world, i don't mean western europe only)

And I dont see that as a misfortune, rather as a disappointment. Now if you excuse me, i need to and try to defeat Great Gray Wolf Sif, im really running out of tactics on how to defeat him :{

A) Yes.

B) It seems very antecdotal on your part.  Ever think there are more news stories about US bullies because the US has like... 15X the population and additionally a much larger and more active media that needs to basically fill a large number of 24 hour news sites and blogs, and additionally in general a larger share of the international news coverage.

B2)  That kind of schooling just seems... awful.  Keep with a system like that and you'll end up like asia.  Good schooling numbers on paper, but in reality a hell on earth for the students that live there.  Stuff like that leads to constant pressure being applied to students by their parents, all day/all night private tutor industry and destruction of any students free will, as there will always be someone willing to push there kid harder to get better grades... and for the majority of the population that's what makes the difference in grades.  Time and effort.

Over half your student population thinks their lives are "over" after the 8th grade and put in schools where only the "dumb" kids are, so they end up getting all the worst teachers, and little to no attention anyway... lesser funding, and probably ignored from any decent college no matter how well you do because you aren't from one of the universities that matter.

C) One form of bullying is indicitive of the others.

B. Yes, I guess I was relying too much on anecdotes and personal experiences (disregarding circumstances that may have not applied to other kids).

B2. Yes, the school system really is awful. The pressure is a huge issue, especially when it comes to the big exams (that one you need to take after the 8th grade to get into high school, and the Baccalaureate that you take after high school if you wanna get into college).

I can say from personal experience that you definately feel like 'OMG, my life is over if I don't get a good mark on this exam'. And in many ways that is true, as the system is set up so the smart kids get smarter (as they end up in the good schools, with good teacher that actually put in effort to maintain the high school's good reputation), and the 'dumb' kids get dumber (they end up in poor schools, where teachers rarely come to class, and are sorrounded by peers uninterested in learning). If you don't make it into one of the good schools, chances of you getting into college are low (note: in order to get into a particular college over here you usually need to take an entrance exam, so the reputation fo the school you went to isn't important like it is in the US, just how well they educated you). And now that they've set up surveillance cameras in the exam rooms (thus making cheating no longer possible), kids from the bad schools woin't even be able to pass the Baccalaureate, which is mandatory if you wanna go to college (only 45% of Romanian high school graduates passed the exam this year).

And bullying is mainly a problem in the bad schools. I would generally avoid visitng such a place. It's really generalized violence though.  I must admit that I was 'bullied' in grade school (especially in grades 1-4), but things changed when I went to high school, and for that I'm grateful to the system for weeding out the bad ones.

C. Really? I wouldn't realyl say that someone who bullies others through teasing also beats people.

The solution to bigotry in the end is bravery and openness. It's how the blacks overcame much of the subjugation by the whites, how women gained the right to vote and how gays gained the right to legal recognition of their partnerships.

Hiding isn't the solution to intolerance.

Also I don't see how tolerance leads to anarchy.

Oh please. Blacks became free because whites from the north allowed them to be and they killed the ones that didn't, same with south africa, mandela took the rule because whites wanted so. As for women, they pretty much gained that right without any struggle whatsoever. Gays can only get married in like 17 countries in the world and can't in over 250. Really, the reason most oppressions/segregations end is because oppressors/segregatiors allowed it to happen, and that happens because human society is progressing towards the more liberal social structure ever since renaissance and french revolution. The only other reason than that is violent or fighting overthrow (revolution), which didn't happen in neither of social groups you mentioned. Really, how many upsprings did the Blacks had against their owners until Lincoln freed them? In this kids case, that is also very unlikely to happen (although i know very little of him, i could be wrong)

And while i agree that hiding isnt the solution to intolerance, its the solution to avoid getting beat up by the surrounding people who hate you.Either that, or fight back. Also, note i didn't say hiding, I said ''lay low'', by which i meant dont shove your gayness to everyone

You missed my point on the anarchy comment

B2.  Really, what's probably the worst about it, is that peoples brains still change a bit in highschool.  There are people who are bad students in gradeschool who really put things together in highschool.

The "bad schools" issue will probably eventually go away if it's anything like asia.  In Asia they do things much the same way, except they have private tutors.  Parents hire private tutors, or put them in schools run by private tutors, after they get out of school.  Often times kids sleep in school so they can go to private tutors all night.

Of course then you have the whole "The public education system is pointless" issue and the fact that parents force their kids to work their entire childhoods.
