Forums - Gaming Discussion - New Xbox getting Blu-ray?

M$ stick with the good old DVD but custom you don't need it. Or do they? Business wise don't go blue ray.

Microsoft will be smart to avoid it as I am sure they will...

By next gen, bluray and any disc media in general will be a data bottleneck. Looks like Bluray will top out at around 12X read speed and even at that speed, most blurays have a maximum transfer rate of 350 megaBITS per second(44 MB). This is slower than most newer 7200 RPM hard drives. Not to mention that bluray or whatever drive just adds to the cost of the console which I'd rather have Sony or MS invest in to a better video card or more ram.

PS Vita has the right idea as does the 3DS when it comes to game storage. Solid State memory should be used with a minimum of 100 MB/s data transfer rate. Now we will see if SSD prices can be driven down enough to be used as gaming storage.

Bluray is getting cheap so they'll likely use it. The next Xbox won't launch for like two years so royalties will be even cheaper by then.

With digital streaming services becoming so prevalent they probably hope MS uses it.

50/50 is how i see it. blu ray is the safe bet or create a custom disc.

Sony really doesn't own the Blu-ray format they where just one of the major co-creators. Anyway I don't see why the the next Microsoft console will not use Blu-ray. Unless they go the Nintendo route and come up with their own format that is similar to Blu-ray when it comes to storage capabilities.

To your Nintendo Comment:

Nintendo changed bluray in a way that they didnt have to pay licensing fees. Same with Dreamcast and the Gigadiscs which were practically CDs. And like the GameCube that had a DVD drive with minor changes and physically smaller discs.

In General:

MS WILL GO WITH BLURAY. Even if they change some details so they wont have to pay licensing fees. Makes sense for MS because they dont want people to buy BR Movies. They want them to stream. I already hear people screaming the new Xbox has no Bluray just another Format with a blue ray reading upto 8 layers a 25gb. And a disc that also is scratch resistant because the datalayers are on the same position and the Drives consist out of the same parts "BUT its not Bluray so shove it we knew BR has no future."

In the end the new Xbox will have a BLUE RAY reading discs. With all the technology thats in Bluray. Like Wii U which also has a Blue Ray drive. The technology is identical. But the official BR format cant be played so they wont have to pay Sony royalties for each disc sold. Sony gets all the money for every BR sold. The other BR owners get all the fees for ever Drive build afair.

It seems likely, if they want to keep their console as "360 degrees" entertainment, blu-ray is becoming mandatory.

Well the WiiU is using a custom Blu-ray so I would expect the 360 would use Blu-ray too.

Wouldn't surprise me, considering how much MS is about flaunting their hardware muscle and staying with the latest tech

ur sig owns totally:):)

i think microsft should use cartridges or vhs, i mean what's more exciting then buying a massive halo 4 blocky game and putting it into youyr big vhs output on your xbox 720 or blowing into the cartridge when your game stops working

MS have come out and said that they can stream 1080p videos anyways now and waiting catchup on peoples internet before moving into it fully (around 2013-2016 is when Microsoft, amazon, apple, google all start moving on cloud gaming i believe) and also just because your friend works at Gamestop doesn't mean he has a edge over you when it comes to these things, if your friend was a engineer over at MS then the rumors have some credibility and even if MS have stated there plans to gamestop there wouldn't be no company wide email to all employees stating that they have spoken with MS and that here are there planes.

Of Course That's Just My Opinion, I Could Be Wrong
