Forums - Gaming Discussion - DICE: Battlefield 3, RAGE "As Good As It Gets This Gen"

Dealspwn

Battlefield 3 and id Software's RAGE represent the best visuals the current generation of consoles is capable of. That's according to DICE, developers of said BF3, with both titles offering an optional high-resolution texture install to ensure gamers can enjoy both games at the highest visual fidelity possible. However, don't expect DICE's or id's next offerings to offer as big a jump forward; as to do so, developers require another line of consoles with next-generation horsepower. Translation? This generation has reached its peak.

"Both Battlefield 3 and Rage are pushing console hardware as much as developers can now, and I don’t think anyone will make something better with this generation of consoles," DICE producer, Patrick Liu, told Now Gamer. Both games are running on all new engines - RAGE boasts id Tech 5, whereas BF3 is rocking Frostbite 2.0 - and both developers have been pretty open in admitting these engines are flexible enough to work on next-gen consoles.

"If we were to do something bigger – which we can – then we would require a next generation console," Liu went on to explain. As for what he'd like to see from a new console, Liu admitted more "processing power" was a must, but top of his list would be an increase in RAM. The Xbox 360 has 512MB of RAM available, whereas the PS3 has the same overall amount, albeit split into two 256MB portions. By today's standards that's incredibly low, with even low-scale PCs and laptops running with 4GBs of RAM.

"We could do so much more," Liu enthused, in regards to more RAM. "So I think more memory would give us more bang for our buck." It'll be interesting to see what the final specs of the Wii U are like, and whether DICE might find their next-generation console in Nintendo's amorphous machine. [Now Gamer]

From that trailer and solo player trailers of BF3... BF3 looks better. I hope you're not comparing it to BF3's multiplayer (and especially not its beta...) as that will of course be slightly worse and I'd argue the trailers I've see for that still look better than what I've seen in Uncharted 3 thus far.

I've actually never understood the fascination some have with Uncharted's visuals. I see all kinds of things that I think are terrible. Like whites and textuer overlaps between various platforms/walls/anything that is supposed to joined in the shot.... while it still looks great... I've seen many others I think are just as good on my PS3. (and yes play through HDMI to 1080p sony tv)

Additionally, there's a lot more than just graphics. The full destruction is a generation ahead of anything else.

Watch this in HD. This was from June in E3 (many months before release)and there are two sceens (0:45 and 0:52) from the PS3 version. Take a special look at the 0:52 mark... these two scenes clearly show its as good or better than anything shown on UC3 or any other console game.

in your opinion... but thats like me posting this trailer

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_J1BbZHCL0&feature=feedu

and saying look at 00:20 or 00:10 i can't think of many games that have that level of detail

edit even other games such as

gears 3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQ2lmycmdvg&feature=related

god of war 3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rs5rLbu3GDY

etc imo have better visuals than what was shown in the bf3 trailer

This is what they said about Crysis back in 2008. Needless to say, I had more fun with Duck Hunt on Nintendo than Crysis on my PC.

Graphics in video games are like Michael Bay movies. They will wow the idiots in the audience who will say "That was the best movie evar! Did u see the special effects! Durrrrrr!" Those with half a brain will walk out saying, "Wow that movie sucked. All those special effects and fight scenes did nothing but try and hide the poor story, atrocious character development, and kindergarten movie script."

Or I could put it another way: Those who worship graphical achievment in video games is like your 35 year old friend who is single does not own a home, yet he has a $8000 dollar computer while you are just married, are paying for a mortgage and are planning for the financing of your future first born's college education.

Absolutely right on all accounts. Opinion is biggest part and some cherry picking is always there. But UC3's best parts are just the cinematic stuff (sands, landscapes, etc look phenominal). Gameplay stuff is good but not better (part hanging on plane, etc) than the gameplay related stuff we've seen from BF3.

I'm just saying that I still think BF3 is the best overall looking thing coming on consoles right now based on the various trailers. Remember the night op trailer shown for PC/PS360 and how they looked virtually the same across them all?
