If you want to do (home)work, pc games, downloading etc get a laptop..

If you just want a nice device to spend some reading, web surfing (except this site) , e mailing, facebook, get an iPad.. I barely use my laptop anymore for the quick easy stuff.. I think my overall use of my laptop went down with 50% since I have an iPad.. really convienent to have one around next to a desktop or laptop..

Face the future.. Gamecenter ID: nikkom_nl (oh no he didn't!!)

wait for a windows 8 tablet if you are going to get a tablet, there is alot of feelings that Microsoft is going to change the tablet game soon. For a laptop what do you want, a portable laptop or a portable desktop? You have specified to completely different products, you have a tablet which is a small app based web browser, while on the other hand you have a high end gaming laptop that offers very little portability.

Of Course That's Just My Opinion, I Could Be Wrong

What are you looking to use the laptop/iPad for?

If you want to do gaming, the laptop is better but honestly, getting a gaming laptop is kind of stupid. They're expensive and a pain to upgrade.

If you're actually planning to do any kind of work on the device, get a laptop.

If you want something for email, surfing the internet, and simple games, get the iPad.

I have an iPad 2 and I love it. I rarely pull out my laptop anymore (gaming laptop at that!). The iPad is great for traveling, great for surfing the internet and email, and there really is an app for just about everything you need. There are a few websites that don't work well with the iPad and that sucks, but for the most part I love my iPad to death.

There are other tablets out there, but for the price, the iPad 2 is about the best you can get. The droid ones aren't that great even though they're more open. They're either a funny shape or just not that good. While the iPad has its share of problems, it really is a great device.

-edit-

And just a note about the memory and 3G

I have the 32GB model and that's generally fine for space.  I usually keep a few gigs of music and maybe 20 gigs of video and that's good.  I don't know what you plan to store on there but if you want to save costs the 32GB could work.  It really just depends on what you want to do. I don't usually have to store a lot of video on it because I use Netflix on it a lot.

As for 3G, you can pay for it monthly as you need it.  I dont' have the 3G version because I thought it was silly but there have been times when it would have been very useful.  If you're traveling a lot, it can be handy.

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

Choosing the WiFi only model instead of the 3G model and not being tied down to a 12 or 24 month contract is a huge saving right of the bat. You do not get hit with those pesky charges Telcos charge customers if you stick with the Wifi model.

32GB Wifi or 64 GB Wifi IPad 2 for me. White or Black? I also own an Ipod Touch 4th Gen 32GB.

I will stick to console gaming. Ipad 2 should be efficient for my needs: browsing the net and emails.

If your looking to get the maximum bang for your buck I recommend this

http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-1015PN-PU27-BU-10-1-Inch-Netbook-Blue/dp/B004V93P9E/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1318316766&sr=1-1

It has a 10.1 inch screen, 1 GB RAM, 512 MB VRAM, 1.66 GHz Dual Core Processor, 250 GB HDD, HDMI Out, 3 USB ports, 9.5 hour battery, wireless b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0, etc. Price: $299

There's no contract for iPad 3G, it's a pay as you need it thing.

Ok that is good. It is not a mobile phone contract with hidden fees and charges.

I would honestly go with a laptop

I own a Sony tablet and it is great, but it can't really reproduce what a laptop has in terms of productivity (maybe unless you got something like the Asus E-pad transformer). Personally, the real kicker is that I need an ethernet port for internet, so while at uni, my tablet can only get online through tethering with my very weak phone signal
