Forums - Gaming Discussion - Dead Island, great game but hated the final hours

First off, spoilers in this thread.  If you care about that sort of thing, ye be warned.

Alright, so it's rare I finish a game and even more rare that I put more than 30 hours into a game but I did both of those things with Dead Island.  The atmosphere was great, the zombies were fun, and they just did a plain phenominal job.  I can't say enough great things about the game.  It had its fair share of flaws, but who cares?  I had a blast!

There were parts that made me jump out of my seat and every time a quest made me trek across the city, I was beyind nervous...but starting around the end of Act II the game just really started to drag and then the final quest is just awful.

There were things that annoyed me like sewer level after sewer level after sewer level, pointless quests, and just needless filler.  Leading up to the prison I was just insanely annoyed because they just kep piling on meaningless quests and annoying escort quests.  The escorts wouldn't have been so bad if the person you're escorting didn't have a death wish.  I then finally get to the prison and then they just give you more pointless filler quests.  Ugh.

But that isn't what is currently getting to me.  What annoyed me was the final quest, it was just insane hard (or it was solo at least).  The game had a decent difficulty up until the end and then they just decided to punish the player for playing the game.

First, there was that gauntlet of cell areas.  You have those annoying fast zombies and the special zombies.  I died many times because they would get a hit on me and then it would be over.  I eventually just ran though the area ignoring everything.

So I make it to the top of the prison and get into the fire fight.  It's not that bad, but there's a guy on the roof that's killing me and I can't get a shot on him.  I didn't actually realize that was the guy I needed to kill because I couldn't see his name.  Anyways, I eventually kill most of the people on the ground and decide to run up the stairs to get to that guy.

At this point, this is where I start getting pissed off.  I had trouble with the guys firing at me, but nothing too bad.  But now all those guys just kind of despawned and it just started spawning endless fast zombies.  I of course didn't realize this and two get my back and destroy me.  From here I die 10-15 times just trying to get back to the stairs because every time I spawn the fast zombies instantly kill me.  I couldn't even climb a ladder, they just instantly knocked me off.

Bullshit I thought!  I wanted to throw the controller throw my window but I also wanted to finish the game so I continue.  I decide to use my final zombie bait to get t othe stairs.  I hope once I get to the stairs there's a cut scene or door or something to save me.  I throw the meat bait and bolt.  It gets the zombies that I spawned right next to but doesn't get the ones near the stairs I was aiming for.  I ignore them, they get some hits on me but I make it to the stairs with only a fraction of health left.  There's a thug in my way but I just run by him.  I make it to the top of the stairs and cut scene!

Jin dies, whatever, didn't like her anyways.  As much as I really like this game, the story was pretty throw away along with the characters.

So now I'm at the final guy and he's a mixture of the fast zombie, thug, and ram.  Fuck.

He charges me and I dodge to the side right off the side of the building and die.

I spawn back at the other side of the level so I bolt for the roof thinking they couldn't spawn other zombies...I was wrong.  So I then have to deal with the bullshit of the fast zombies and the final boss. I die another 10-15 times just trying to live longer than 10 seconds.  I even made it up the ladder at one point but for some reason the fast zombies on the roof can climb ladders.

I finally build up enough rage to attack the boss and get most of his health down.  I die, respawn, bolt for the boss and finally kill him.  You get a stupid ending where it stuffs the hacker guy in there.  Whatever, the story is throw away.

==========================

So to the point of the thread!  I loved the game...up until the ending.  It felt like they either wanted to force you to play co-op (which I didn't want to do) or they just decided to make it next to impossible so people couldn't finish the game.  It's sad because I liked the game so much but the insane difficulty spike is now the last thing I remember of the game.

Can't read post due to spoilers but I am happy Dead Island gets recognition from Twesterm and many more gamers around the world.

Isn't it the rule that good games have to have awful endings? I can't think of many of my favourite games over the past year which have actually had a good ending...

True, but usually they're awful because they just don't know how to end a story, not because they decide to do soul-draining boring pointless quests and then increase the difficulty to unfair levels.

Well generally they just put a boss who doesn't really fit with the rest of the game at all, think Uncharted 2, Gears 2 & 3, LA Noire and more. It is mostly a case of trying to escalate the tension but it not really fitting with the tone of the game

I liked it.

I traded mine in. I could not stand another sewer mission. I did make it to the jungle, but gave up after being asked to "retrieve" munitions from bad guys. It's too bad because the beginning of the game was so promising. Anyway, I got Rage in the trade-off. Much, much, much better game imo.

Proud owner and supporter of the YAKUZA games!

Man, sewer level after sewer level very nearly killed it for me.  I almost quit the game when they told me to go through the sewers in the prison section but luckily it was a five minute trip with nothing really in it.
