Forums - Sales Discussion - Xbox 360 Vs. Playstation 3 2012 - *February* Update

Did this in another thread yesterday. This includes all adjustments including the adjustments just made based on NPD information.

Start 1-Jan 1-Oct   7,719,510 6,388,172     1,331,338
Week end Oct 8       252466 189,184 63,282   1,394,620
Week end Oct 15       230678 191,641 39,037   1,433,657
Week end Oct 22       239593 195,635 43,958   1,477,615
Week end Oct 29       291046 265,941 25,105   1,502,720
Week end Nov 5       341712 282,943 58,769   1,561,489
Week end Nov 12       380376 517,954 -137,578   1,423,911
Week end Nov 19       386772 461,139 -74,367   1,349,544
Week end Nov 26       835484 1,201,886 -366,402   983,142
Week end Dec 3       588757 679,966 -91,209   891,933

So through just the 1st week of December the PS3 is now down to 891,933.  From the numbers so far released for December 10th it looks like the 360 will win that week by over 150K (My estimate is 165K). This leads to the weeks where the 360 will have the most signifigant leads of the year perhaps more than BF week.  It will be close and will depend on the special sales that go on more than anything else and so far the 360 is being discounted far more in the region that sells the most (Americas) and those discounts are growing each week.

This week and next 2 weeks WoW changes from 201. As you can see growth occurs in all regions, but nothing can compare to the growth in the Americas.

PS3 360
America 14% 19%
Japan 5% 3%
Other 12% 12%
PS3 360
America 63% 55%
Japan 16% 4%
Other 11% 9%
PS3 360
America 5% 5%
Japan 29% 42%
Other 0% 4%

So, with the next 4 weks, the X360 has to average over the PS3 by about 220,000 each week. I don't know. It's really going to depend on Christmas week to counter-act the deficit from the other three weeks.

I'll stick to my original prediction of I don't think so.

So basically the annual sales of both consoles will be within 3 or 4% of each other....

Pretty good for the 360 considering the lack of a proper price cut, it is in its 6th year and the PS3 had a global official price cut.

Don't forget a slew of exclusives that 360 lacked and made it an inferior machine this year apparently.

So to summarise, exclusives that PS3 fans determined were much superior and made the console a much better choice, a price cut, chequered history, no price cut, higher price point on some SKU's - Kinect bundles than PS3, being on the market for longer by a year, having an online service that people need to pay for - this again puts alot of people off apparently.

Hmm..

Disconnect and self destruct, one bullet a time.

The key word is average. By my calculations the PS3 will be up about 725K with 3 weeks left 2 before Christmas.  Last year the 360 sold as much or more those 2 weeks as the 360 did this year during BF week and that was with inadequate supply in the Americas last year. So the people that think it can be done are basing this thought on.

A. Growth in North America, where the 360 is the market leader now, is much higher ending the year compared to the rest of the world.
B. Last year 360 was short in supply in North America and stores ran out constantly last year hurting sales.
C. In North America MS is heavily promoting and incenting consumers to purchase 360s far more than Sony is the PS3.
D. Past NPD results have shown that console sales can double between November and December for the market leader.

Either way, if 360 manages to be ahead by something like 10-50k I wouldn't call that a win. I wouldn't call a PS3 lead by 10-50k a win either AND I'll wait until late January to see if there will be any adjustments, especially in Europe/Others because the numbers look a bit weird there in some places. A tie would mean though that MS were wrong all year.

by weird do you mean undertracked or overtracked?

*sigh* it's instigating remarks like this, from both sides, that usually discourage me from posting in sales threads like this.

It's certainly possible, but I think a safer bet would be it just mssing the mark

*sigh* it's cheap shots like this, from both sides, that usually make me avoid the sales threads like this.

I've been shot at enough recently to warrant at least one unreasonable stupid post. And taking into account the amount of posts I just let slide I think I deserve to treat myself once ;).

Well, I haven't been in this thread for a few weeks, so you may be right. TBH, you post is fairly peaceful compared most of the stuff I see when in sales threads. I just dislike seeing posts like that because of childish flamewars hat could erupt from it.

Wait...so adjustments are not gonna be taken into account in this thread??
