Forums - Sales Discussion - Battlefield 3 losing Preorders??

Lost mine as well. Switching it over to another game. I already have a busy holiday line-up of games with limited time to play, so when I experienced the lame beta and the same old gameplay as Battlefield: BC2, I had to make a call. MW3, Gears of War 3, Uncharted 3, and Halo Anniversary/Reach will be my mulitplayer games with AC: Revelations, Rage, Skyrim, and SW: ToR fleshing out my library.

What was their logic for using an old build?

"The Open Beta is a true Beta

The Battlefield 3 Open Beta is based on software that is more than one month old. We need to test the new back end dedicated server structure we’ve built. Not only have we built a new game engine, but an entirely new back end system so that everyone can enjoy the benefits of dedicated servers on all platforms.

Just like normal procedure when releasing a game, the Open Beta has had long lead times due to testing, certification, and setting up. This means that the code you are now playing is actually quite early and not representative of the final game.

We had to do this in order to have as many people testing as possible, in order to ensure a top quality experience when the game is released. However, we’re confident in the Battlefield formula and confident that our fans will support us in order to make Battlefield 3 better."

"more than one month old"

That is not reassuring at all! Most games are done and finished months before their release with only minor polishing going on. Beta's to be beneficial and appropriate should be out months before release, not a few weeks! The fact that this code is only 1-2 months old has me very worried about the final state of the game because 1-2 months polishing/bug fixing/etc is not that much time at all...

Lets look at CoD for example, they had the codxp event and the online ran great more then two montrhs before release. Some will say but its such an old engine, but BF3 loooks the same as BC2 and MoH. MW3 is also being developed by 3 different teams since IW crashed and burned and lost most of its team. MW3 also looks better then MW2 based on the gun models and sound effects in their latest trailers and with more action going on at once.

I have to be honest and say i did cancel my pre-order. It was £40 and that is a lot of money right now with so many games coming out.

I was a huge Battlefield fan. Played it from the start. But this time around they have sold their soul. The battlefield feel has gone. I think back to the beta for BF2 and it just makes me feel happy. I wish it was like that again.
But it isn't. EA went after COD and by doing so has annoyed the origional bf fans. It is a huge slap in the face.

Someone needs to be fired over the whole beta handling thing. People who like Battlefield like it because of it's huge open maps that give you loads of different ways to play the game. They like the vehicles and planes. The whole feeling of your in a war and war is chaos is what makes it great. But BF3 beta doesn't have that. It is the total opposite of that. Narrow corridors. Fast shooting/dying that makes it feel pointless that your fighting. Rush mode is a total joke.
I paid basically £700 to upgrade my pc to handle this game and it does so with ease. But i was hoping for the BF experience. The one that i had so many great memories from in the past. But all i got was another COD experience and that is not what i wanted. Whoever made the decision to do the beta in the way it has been done should be fired as they clearly have no idea what the BF community is like, they have no idea how previous games have been made, have no idea what the main reasons were for people playing Battlefield. And because of that they are now getting the negative press for it. They brought it on themselves.

The sad thing is that they could of saved it, they had time. They could of opened Caspian Border without the need for a password, made it conquest, 64 players and reduce things such as scope beam. But they didn't. They continued to do Metro. The map that was used in Alpha for so long. And since then has been little change.

This beta was an attempt to get the COD players. It was not about testing it, it was basically them saying "hey cod player, look at this game, your love it, come play it, come buy it!". And by the looks of things they failed.

So that is why i canceled my pre-order and got a refund because i don't think they deserve my money for it. I will wait until the game is released, see what people are saying, read the reviews, hope they have fixed things and brought it back to being a Battlefield game rather then another COD wanabe. If it has done those things then i will buy it. But right now Dice and EA owe the Battlefield community bigtime, we don't owe them anything.

Bro.

Calm down.

It's the

-------------BETA------------

Not the final product. They didn't take the huge stages out of the final product. They just weren't in the beta, like you said.

it's amazing how many people keep going " IT's a BETA CALM DOWN" like it means anything to them. EA screwed up releasing a BETA to begin with and so close to release...regardless of it being beta or final product it was an abysmal marketing decision...because that's what it basically was.

Mate no offence but if you believe that then your a fool.

Beta's have been around for decades now. OPEN beta is used for various things but now days it is a marketing ploy. Especially for games like this. If the server maximum is 64 players then why do they need thousands of people on servers to test them? Having 64 people is the maximum it can take, having thousands of people makes no difference at all. If it was an MMO then fine you can stress test with thousands of people.

But in this instance the point of this beta is exactly the same as the other betas i.e MW2, COD:BO, UC3, GW3 and so on. The point being it is to give people a taste of what is to come. Why do you think Dice have tv adverts showing the 99 problems trailer with the huge words at the end saying "OPEN BETA NOW AVAILABLE go to xyz to download"? Why would they need to advertise it on tv? How many other companies do that with their games?

The beta is/was nothing more then a demo. If you think they will change things in a couple of weeks then your going to be dissapointed. Especially considering as they have already said they will have to patch the game after release.

I am perfectly calm. As i said at the start there are plenty of high profile games coming out in the next few weeks. I won't be parting with my hard earned cash based simply on the fact i used to play the older games. I am a gamer not a blind fanboy.

They shouldn't have released the beta then.

with a dev time of ~2 years of full production and 280+ people  working on it a lot can change in a month. Dice have been posting long lists of fixes that they have made since the beta was compiled on their blog, at the very least they should have it up to the level BLOPS was at launch.

As an example by the time the open BETA went live this is a partial list of changes that were made to the current build, and they have been making more changes and fixes every day since, a lot can chage in terms of polish in the last month of production I mean the game still hasn't been announced to have gone gold yet add in a day one patch and most issues will likely be fixed.

* Fixed occasional client crash when reviving.
* Fixed killcam showing glitched area under map if your killer is dead.
* Issue with spawning on dead squad mates fixed.
* Fixed a bug where shooting at a moving enemy could cause more than the intended amount of damage.
* Crosshairs for shotguns have been replaced with a new, thinner, art.
* A subtle low health screen effect has been added.
* Tweaked scores of Medals and Service Stars.
* Tweaked the Rank progression.
* Pushing prone on console will not play the animation twice.
* Fixed loss of Squad Leader after EOR at some times.
* Framerate stability fixes.
* The 3D spotting icons has been tweaked to better match the target’s visibility. Icons will show frequently less on mostly obscured targets.
* Fixed issue with crosshair disappearing after round transition.
* Fixed issue with crosshair disappearing after trying to deploy while the countdown timer still active.
* Squad list now shows specializations chosen, VOIP activity and dead squad mates.
* Non working options in squad menu fixed: "Private" flag and "Switch Teams". * Fixed occasional client crash when reviving.

Moderator icon has been added on the forums for moderators.
• Players with rank 45 will now recieve the correct icon on their stats page
• Improved the scroll handling in the Server Browser
• Added more patches for Leaderboards for Xbox 360 and PS3
• More accurate ping now shows up in the server browser
• More accurate number of players now show up in the server browser

Plus Repi just mentioned on twitter that he had made GPU memory management tweaks that should further improve performance, just last night.

Tho the game has been rushed and mistakes were made in putting out this beta, but Dice are amazing devs and they are working around the clock to get this polished while using a brand new engine. I and I wish them all the best in that endever even if I have no real interest in the game ATM.
