I might take some shit for this, but adding the "online pass" actually makes the used game market more like any other used market.
Hear me out.
Usually when you buy something used you are getting a slightly worn and INFERIOR version of the new thing. Take a car for example: You buy used to save money, but it may have dings in the body, or maybe it has some high mileage and won't last for very long, or maybe it burns oil so you have to constantly add more. You save money on the initial purchase to deal with some issues later.
HOWEVER, with the used game industry, people are accustomed to paying used prices for an operationally "new" game. In the past buying a game new or used really had no difference. You had all the features, all the content, at all the same speeds, for a reduced price.
With online pass people are finally getting an actual "used" game for the price they are paying.

Its second hand, it should have diminished value, and in a software not hardware sense this is the diminished value. Get used to it. It makes perfect sense if you approach it with logic rather than entitlement. |
humm when you a buy a used car you check it out first if something doesn't work and it bother you, you buy an other one that fit your critera here you don't have a choice it's either buy new with online or buy used and no online unless you pay us. If you buy the game and didn't like it why should the value drop by 10$ as soon as you try the online? so you get less when you sell it to someone else that might like the game. I don't get why gamers here like to be nickel and dime so much it's like you guys are begging to pay more, don't be surprise if next gen new games won't have online neither you'll need to buy it a like dlc, just like metal gear online was suppose to be
Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

I agree with you for the most part, although I can see the issue with some people because of the used prices of games (places like Gamestop, for example, who sell used games of new titles for like $5 less than the new value). Of course, if people shop around, I'm sure they can get a used copy of a newer title for a lot less than what stores like Gamestop has.
At least Xbox is up front about the cost to play games online.
This is a sneaky, creepy way for playstation to charge for online... so its not really free for everyone.
Just sayin'

Online pass is there on the 360 too, for games like Mortal Kombat.

I don't have a problem with the idea of an online pass. I just don't think it's being executed as effective as possible ( although this could be because the idea is still a new method). It would more effective if they gave used owners a demo of the multiplayer so they wouldn't be forced to blindly pay $10 for something they may or may not enjoy. |
Then you should look towards THQ and Homefront. In that game, although there was an online pass, you could still play multiplayer but you got capped at level 5 and were prevented from unlocking certain load-outs. There also isn't a limit as to how long you could play the multiplayer for without the pass. Think this is the sort of implementation your lookig for.

Exactly how isn't this upfront?
well i'll order if i have to! i don't buy used, but wht about those customers that buy it used when its nolonger being published?
all of the manufactures need to come up with something better then this, and work with gamestop and other used game retailers and work something out cause this an't gone cut it! it essentially prevents used game buyers from buying DLC cause they can't access the multiplayer.
