Forums - Sales Discussion - Wii selling even faster than the DS

In a straight comparison of sales in the first 20 weeks from launch sales of Nintendo's Wii console are faster than even their own DS, which has been breaking records all over the world. Only Sony's PS2 sold more in the first 4 months back when it launched in 2000.

Wii selling even faster than the DS

Around the Network

In a straight comparison the PSP sold faster than DS and the XBOX1 and XBOX 360 sold faster than the DSi n the US. However the DS always maintained the LTD sales over the PSP when it came to comparing by launch dates.

All I can say is "Scoreboard!"

It is what it is. Wii detractors can spin things however way they want, or they can come up with lists of future games, but Wii is taking off. There's no way to downplay that :-p

Waiting for some Sony fanboy to repeat the PS2 slow start / GC fast start myth in 5,4,3,2.....

Well the DS didn't *really* take off until the DSLite came out.

Kind of true. I mean it was a phenomenon in Japan before the Lite came out. In the US and Europe however it was basically dead even between the PSP and DS until the Lite came out (also don't discount the release of New Super Mario Bros which came out at the same time). Since then it hasn't looked back, most months selling 2 to 1 or better over the PSP.

New Super Mario Bros' importance for the sales of the DS can't be underestimated. For example, it was number one of the ds' software sales last week in switzerland. This is amazing i think, that such a classic game can make a handheld win a generation.

Currently Playing: Skies of Arcadia Legends (GC), Dragon Quest IV (DS)

Last Game beaten: The Rub Rabbits(DS)

The Wii may be selling like hotcakes, but that doesn't mean that this headline isn't silly.  The DS launch was pretty underwhelming, honestly.  I worked at Best Buy at the time, and we had a whole table dedicated to DS with a launch strategy and everything.  We had plans for how to manage the line outside if it got big, and expected a sellout crowd.  I think we sold like 7 DSes out of our shipment of more than 60.

I'm no spinmaster -- the only current-gen console I own is a Wii, but this comparison is still meaningless.  Saying that the Wii launched better than the DS is like saying I can run faster than a snail.

The DS was not very successuf until Nintendogs came out circa week 52, let's see if a game can help the Wii beat the DS from week 52.

In Japan the DS skyrocketed at the End of '05. At 600k, it probably had the biggest weekly sales of all time (outside launch weeks). In early '06 Nintendo had to apologize to Japanese Customers because the DS fat was seriously sold out for weeks. That was before the DS Lite. The DS Lite has helped in the US and Europe, but in Japan the DS won on games like Brain Training and Animal Crossing. I'm still looking for that kind of Japanese epiphany for the Wii. It's not Wii Sports.
