Forums - Sony Discussion - Resistance 3: Disappointing Sales Cast Series into Doubt

At first blush, Resistance 3, the retro 1950’s first person shooter game from Insomniac Games, looks like it had all the ingredients for success. It has a good storyline, received lots of positive critical reviews, a decent fan base and released emotionally gripping ads. Well, just like in cooking, even if you have all the ingredients but they are not mixed right and if the circumstances are not right, you will just cook it the wrong way and things will not turn out successful. Based on Resistance 3’s sales figures, it looks like all those awesome ingredients did not add up to create a decent hit.

Resistance 3 has been out for quite a while now but was only able to rack out 275,000 copies. Considering the big budgets involved in major game title development nowadays, 275,000 copies is not going to cut it. Like it or not, video games are going the same way as Hollywood movies. Studio released movies normally cost 30 million dollars or more to produce and lackluster movies are only made possible because hits subsidise the studio to take risks in financing smaller titles. So, where does this lead the Resistance franchise? Some bloggers are saying that maybe they should recycle the IP into other console platforms while others say that they should pay attention what fans are saying and keep that in mind for resistance 4. Considering the cost of development and the amount of sales this title has generated, the possibility that there will be Resistance 4 is pretty much doubtful at the moment.

No evidence one way or the other, just supposition , it was never going to cost too much look it's the 3rd PS3 game and not some new game built from the ground up, the series has sales of 5-6 mill and Sony owns the IP so it wont be recycled in to other consoles unless they mean a Resistance Retribution type game for Vita, I think it will sell a little under what Resistance 2 sold since the fps market is stronger now but it might continue to mark out a niche as the Number 2 Sony fps.
Only Sony knows what their expectations for the series long term are, having said that I think there is scope for a fourth but not a fifth.

Research shows Video games  help make you smarter, so why am I an idiot

It should eventually sell 2m I reckon, but it is certainly not going to change Insomniac going multiplatform

No it won't,  they where contracted by Sony to make them a FPS so they had something in that genre for the early PS3 and they have delivered 3 games and has far as Insomniac goes , thats all she wrote.

I hope the game legs it out to 2 mil.

I dont know where they got 270k from (i guess first week), but it has sold 370k, and that just in 2 weeks, so I dont know what they mean its been out a while. After 3 weeks it should have around 450k, and will likely have around 1.5 million by years end.
So this article is rather stupid

sony should kill the franchise and try something new. it isn't all that big and it is already in decline.

Am I the only one who knows that Insomniac says after R3, they aren't making anymore or did I make that up...?

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

Xbox One: What are you doing Dave?

The game was released about 20 days ago and they say "it´s been out for quite a while"?...not even a month old.

The game is doing fine, its on track to beating Bulletstorm, Crysis 2, and a ps3 exclusive with a bigger brand name Socom 4.
