If you want to buy a PS3, buy it. If you don't want to buy a PS3, don't buy it.
If you're that afraid of the PS3 failing, then sure, don't buy it. I think the Wii could possibly fail sometime in the future, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to get it now and play the games that are fun for me now.
If there are at least a few games out or at least announced that you want to get, and you think it's worth it to buy a PS3, then buy it...if people think like that, then PS3s will get sold and you won't have to worry about support. Unfortunately for Sony, that isn't the case, and many people don't see enough reason to get a PS3 currently.
Personally, I'd recommend a 360 or Wii, because 360 will be getting as many great games as PS3 for some time I'd bet, and the Wii is just awesome fun with tons of games coming out.
