Dead Island>Resistance 3 lol

Things are getting interesting.

What? No it's not. Apples with apples R3 is 27K greater than Dead Island according to the Americas numbers I'm seeing. Though I am starting to wonder if PS3 his reaching some sort of FPS saturation point. Even the uber-mega-hit Modern Warfare 3 is looking like it'll fall short of it's lesser Treyarch Black sheep Ops cousin.

Look at all the multiplat FPS games on the top 40 this week and compare to that so-called parity attach rate game sales ratio (1.6) for PS3 and 360 install base: Dead Island 1.93 ratio (OK not a shooter, but it is first person right? and there is a lot of shooting); Deus Ex 1.85 ratio; Black Ops 1.6 ratio; MoH 1.4 ratio. The trend: more recent games are getting worse ratios. Even WH 40K is performing poorly, and that's TPS. As opposed to Driver SF with a very pro-PS3 ratio of 1.3; NCAA football with an equally pro-PS3 1.28 ratio; and AC: Brotherhood with a pretty even 1.54 (slightly pro-PS3). And we won't even mention Mortal Kombat's ratio with PS3 version in Americas = the whole world for 360.

Pre-orders (not really as good indicator as actual sales, but...) MW3 a Massive 2.73 ratio; BF3 (in which EA shows a bit of favouritism to PS3) an also huge 2.31 ratio. I expect Rage to actually flop on PS3 while doing respectably on 360, and I bet Borderlands 2 will sell way below the parity ratio too.

In that context I think it's almost predictable that R3 is going to only sell averagely, and possibly be the lowest selling of the 3 PS3 Resistance games.

Is it too early / not enough data to say that the FPS genre is dying on PS3?

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that while ME3 won't come close to the magic 1.6 ratio it will improve it's ratio over what ME2 managed.

OK-ish small drop for PS3 HW. Japan bounce means it's still on track for PS3 to crack 200K world wide. It's up to us EMEAA.

Nice wee lift for 360 off Dead Island and maybe a bit off WH 40K.

Wii almost 20K behind PS3. I wonder if Wii sales have been negatively affected by the Wii U announcement, even though it's quite a while off launching.

Ummm, what else? Ocarina of Time 3DS legging very well with a LTD 20% attach rate. My son almost bought a 3DS on the weekend, but because Ocarina of Time was the ONLY 3DS game that looked remotely interesting he decided to wait a bit more. Probably until the first proper Pokemon game comes out for 3DS, given it was the only game he really liked on DS. Hopefully that's after the first 3DS redesign where they'll put that second analog knob on the actual 3DS and not sell you an extra attachment for something that should have been there from the get go.

Don't forget about Rage in October, R3's another strong rival

Pretty much as expected start for R3 I'd argue, given it's status relative to the franchise. R2 drew a lot of heat after a fair bit of initially positive hype, with both it's SP and MP aspects heavily criticized. The only element everyone seemed to like was the totally separate coop element.

R2 also threw the franchise out of sync vs Resistance 1 by committing a number of (in hindsight) bloody obvious errors:

- changing core gameplay from what most seemed to like about the first title (old school FPS, long SP campaign, variety of weapons and gameplay) linked to a pretty fast and fun MP to an obvious Halo/CoD clone. In particular I'd note that when a key USP for your franchise is the crazy weapons and lots of 'em limiting the player to two is simply self defeating

- abruptly and with poor explanation changing a lot of the feel of the Universe which clearly threw off a lot of people who found the alternative history setting a real USP for the franchise

- being too rushed with obvious flaws vs what the first title delivered (although I have to admit at least Insomniac where endearingly open about this in behind the scenes videos, etc)

Coming after that, R3 was bound to be somewhat muted. The reviews have been decent but not great and while it does capture what was popular in the first (TBH its almost a re-telling of the first really just based in US this time) it lost the one thing R2 added everyone liked, the crazy separate coop.

Word of mouth seems positive so I expect it'll slowly trek to OK numbers, but R3 would have needed to be perfect to recover from the damage R2 did to the franchise IMHO.

Pretty good start for Dead Island though - player preferences cutting through critics views as easily as a Transformers movie. Patches incoming to keep that baby going I'd imagine given it looks like being a bit of a sleeper hit.

HW pretty much as expected.

Only other thing of note for me is Rise of Nightmares - unless it sees a big boost for holidays it's going to tank.  I remain unconvinced with Kinect as a platform for big sales currently (Adverntures doesn't count as it's bundled and outside that it's only supported a few solid hits so far).  I'm assuming MS are planning to market Kinect heavily for the holidays, and TBH I think they're going to have to as I'm not sure it has enough momentum to do anything like last year without special pushing unless some of the upcoming titles (maybe Star Wars) click with families.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Interesting to note that a "core" Kinect motion game on 360 didn't sell well at all. It didn't much better than many Wii games of a similar type.

I guess it wasn't the Wii audience to blame, but rather bad quality product.

Of course it was the Wii audience to blame. And much of the Kinect audience IS the Wii audience, that and the core Kinect owners (like me) actually have good alternatives.

Still doesn't matter which way you slice it, over 7 million Kinects in the US, and this is the result.

Man, why can't you just let me have fun for once!

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

X360 hits 33 million in Americas!
X360 78,640 (+3%) 32,981,622

Officially, next week's chart.

Actually, late monday this week, probably at 33,040,000 now

But the party starts til it's official.

JK.

You wait. Once adjustments come in Seece has a good chance of being right in the first post.

I guess 33 million is a number of note (1/3 (almost) of 100 Million). But really the 360 milestone was 32,680,000, which everyone (including Seece) missed I think it also passed it's 49,300,000 milestone without any cheering. The big question is will people notice / celebrate if/when it makes the 73,950,000 milestone? 34,000,000 is also a more important number than 33,000,000, once it gets there.

For PS3 I wonder if it will reach its 61,910,000 or 23,350,000 milestone first.

And not to leave Wii out of it I wonder if anyone marked its 40,780,000 milestone.

Decent week overall, but Sony should push PS3 better in USA, good XB360, very good 3DS that with less SW push than XB360 and PS3 grows the most anyway.

SW has a lot of launches, but none outstanding and one, Driver, really disappointing, making this quite a meh SW week overall, down WoW. Both Kinect and Balance Board are slowly sinking in America (Kinect already sank outside of America and UK), will special offers, price cuts, bundles and holidays be able to revive them?

For me the only significant milestone for PS3 is 360 LTD + 1 unit or Wii LTD + 1 unit

I hope Space Marine will do better in Europe
