Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Opinions on Umbrella Chronicles

These are my first impressions that I posted in the game's comments:

I've been playing this game for a week now, and I must say it is HARD. Maybe it's because I've been playing pretty easy games lately, but dying several times during the first level, and having substantial trouble with the others even after figuring out the basics surprised me in a very good way. Not much trouble anymore, but it's still pleasantly challenging, and there's a sense of accomplishment when I realise I've had to learn how to play it.

So far I've clocked in 10 hours on the game, most of which was me and my roommate playing in co-op. I'm still pretty motivated to get all the unlockables and raising my score, not to mention playing this at parties with other friends, so I think I'll get at least another 10h out of it.

Heartily recommended to any fan of lightgun shooters or Resident Evil. It's not the most typical member of either genre, but great fun nevertheless.

Not much to add at this point, since I've been mostly playing my PC, except that I brought the game to my parents place when I went there for the holidays, and was surprised to see that my little brother loved it.

I never thought Umbrella Chronicles had any casual appeal due to the in-built assumption that everyone who plays it is a Resident Evil fan, and how hard (yet crucial) it is to get critical hits, but he clocked in some 4-6 hours with the game in a few days. Now he owned a PS1 and 2 back when we were kids (before they both broke), but he only ever played a few footballs games on them, so he's pretty much the average European gamer. He also loves Wii Sports, and is really starting to make me see just how wide the appeal of the Wii can get.

I'm not a fan of light gun games but I am a fan of the Resident Evil series so the two kind of average out for me. Every reason I like the game relates to it being a Resident Evil game. It's cool to replay levels I played years ago in the previous games from a new perspective. If it wasn't for that I wouldn't much care for the game.

It does have one thing that is somewhat annoying, why does the screen have to wobble constantly? I haven't played many light gun games or played them much but I don't recall that in other light gun games (I could be wrong though).

Also I consider it a downpayment for getting RE5, RE5:subplot, or RE6 on the Wii.

Yeah, I'm really not digging the camera movement in this game.  I've played a lot of rail shooters in the arcades, and this one seems to be rather annoying with moving you viewpoint around too much.  This problem is exacerbated by the fact that the entire game is drawn in varying shades of brown and gray, so there isn't enough contrast on the screen to bring out your targets.

I'm also finding the gameplay frustrating.  Ammo for your special weapons is rather limited, forcing you to use the handgun a lot to conserve.  But there are a lot of places in the game where they expect you to use a more powerful weapon or get your ass handed to you, and there's no way of knowing when they're going to occur.  When they do occur, if you take time to switch to a more powerful weapon, you get your ass handed to you anyway.  Annoying.  Like I said, I have a lot of rail shooter experience, and I like them, but I'm finding this one very frustrating.

And what's with the load times to load sequences where you move through one room for 7 seconds and encounter no enemies?  Why not just roll that into the cutscene?

I was about to get this game but I decided not to. I think that the combination of the review scores it got and the fact that No More Heroes comes out soon made me not want it right now. Perhaps I’ll get it when it get older but for now NMH and SSBB has my interest.

I'm a bit dissapointed in RE:UC. It's not bad by any means, it's just that my expectations were way too high (a 8.5+ game).

Aiming is a bit itchy (especially after playing games like MP3) and there's slowdown at spots, character speech is laughable and the game is sometimes unfair in it's ammo. It's a 7.0 game in my humble opinion...

That's funny. I don't have any problems with the special weapons at all. If you pick the right weapon to bring with you before the mission, take all the pickups, and use your grenades somewhat wisely, you're often left with a lot of special weapons ammo to spare. Also, the handgun gets a lot less frustrating once you master the critical hits on zombies - I can often score 3 or 4 criticals in a row now without much trouble, so I hardly ever use special weapons on zombies unless there are multiple zombies really close or the crowd is too big to handle.

What really annoys me are the vomiting/spitting zombies. They are often very far away and somehow I can never get a critical hit on them because they keep cocking their head back. Eventually you'll run out of ammo and have to reload, unless you waste your special weapons on them. I wouldn't shed a tear if Capcom had left those out of the game.

I'd give it a 7.7. I don't have the patience to go through all of the original games, even though I love 4 and can't wait for 5, so this gives me a good general sense of what happened. It was fun playing through it with my friend who has played the other games (I've only played Zero) since he was able to fill in the details.

My only complaints: Nemesis is way, way, WAY too easy to kill. He dies even easier than he did in the second movie. I had a harder time on the giant worm than on Nemy, and this version of Nemesis did not deserve to be the final boss.

Also, it would have been nice if P2 could just press start and join in, as in most lightgun games.

played it at a friends house over the holidays.....LOVED IT. i'm not sure i'd like it as much single player though.

This games is awesome, its one of the best wii games full stop. I put 30 hours into it without playing other games in between. Its good to see 3rd party games of a decent standard.

Double post, So I give RE UC 9/10

-UBISOFT BOYCOTT!-

Haven't played it yet, but will do soon.
Just wanted to say: Buy RE (1) GameCube remake if you haven't played it yet. Amazing game, quite scary, great story (suffers a bit from bad controls though). You should be able to buy it for 10-15 bucks online.
