Forums - General Discussion - The FairTax, Join in!

OK! I have been meaning to create this thread for some time. I want this thread to be a long debate about any and all aspects the FairTax would have on our (American) lives. I would also welcome points of view and questions from people outside of the US.

Firstly, I am not an official spokesman for the FairTax, but I support the idea wholeheartedly. I believe that everyone who fully understand the FairTax loves it.

Now the Facts:

The FairTax would replace all taxes on all income.

There would be no payroll taxes, capital gains taxes, social security taxes, or corporate taxes (among others).

We would receive the entirety of our paychecks, without any withholding by the feds.

The FairTax would not be enforced on used items.

The FairTax would give a monthly rebate (here after known as the Prebate) of the taxes used on life essential products.

Debate!

It's actually the most researched method for taxation seen in a long time. There are many proponents of it. I see from your sig that you support Huckabee, but Paul supports this as well.

It seems the mods need help with this forum.  I have zero tolerance for trolling, platform criticism (Rule 4), and poster bad-mouthing (Rule 3.4) and you will be reported.

Ahh yes, Paul said that he would sign it if it came up. However Paul isn't actively selling the FairTax to the American People as Huckabee is.

I could have thought he was, since he wants to get rid of the IRS and Federal Reserve. You'd need something to fill in the gap. Going to have to go back and read more...

What exactly is the fair tax? When do you pay tax?

The FairTax is a national Retail sales tax. It is paid whenever the end-user buys anything new at retail. Services are included in being taxed. However used items are not.
The tax is about 23% on everything. The Tax rate is inlcuded in the price so the shelf price of a high-end blender is $100 the actual cost of the blender is $77 and the FairTax is $23. The sales receipt will note this divide on the costs.

Ah, here we go: http://weblog.larrydburton.com/archives/2006/09/26/ron-paul-and-the-fairtax

The Fair Tax is something you would pay every time you went to the store and bought a CD, TV, Clothes, etc. It's a consumption tax instead of something that comes out of your income. In simple terms, you'll get your entire paycheck and have more money to spend when you go to the store and buy the products that you want. It kind of shifts the idea of tax brackets to an equal and "fair" tax percentage. It's actually better for the "poor" since they wouldn't be buying as much and (edit: likely) worse for the "rich" as they would be buying more (and more expensive) items.

Edit:  It sounds bad the way I put it originally.  Think of it this way. (Not real numbers)

Someone getting paid 15,000/year is getting hit for 20% taxes in an income tax system.  They take home about 12,000.
Someone getting paid 150,000/year is getting hit for 40% taxes in an income tax system.  they take home about 90,000.

They are both in different tax brackets, but the 150,000/year person has more buying potential.  They are taking more home even though they pay more in taxes.

The Fair Tax would give both of these individuals their entire paycheck and based on their purchases, would be paying 23% of whatever they buy into taxes.  So the 150K personbuying their $80,000(base) car would be paying $98,400 for it where the person making 15K a year buying the 12,000 car would be paying 14,760.  The "richer" person is paying 18,400 in taxes where the "poorer" is paying 2,760.

This thread isn't simply a Pro-FairTax only thread. I want the detractors to factually attack it so they can be set straight....

I read that link Andir and Paul says that he would support it and likes parts of it. He simply wouldn't want to see the income tax replaced with a high national sales tax. From my understanding Ron Paul is for eliminating the income tax and not replacing it at all. A RuPaul believer here in this community told me as such. Anyways I am not looking to make this into a debate on Paul's support or lack thereof for the FairTax. But do not hesitate to bring it up .... it simply wasn't the main focus of the thread.

Please don't start the fire by namecalling.

I was simply putting out the information.  Paul is for a smaller Federal government.  Of which is the removal of the income tax system and much of the Federal spending, which would mean a lower Fair Tax if it was even needed at all (meaning that the State's already implemented Sales tax might already cover the costs needed.)  Many people misunderstand Paul because they think he's anti-this or anti-that, but in actuality he thinks it should be a state affair, not a Federal case.  This confuses people into thinking that he (using this thread, and your statement as an example) doesn't support it.  He would support it if it was needed.  People confuse his ideas with the current state of the country.

I apologize for my ignorance. I didn't know that was a bad name. I have no bone to pick with Ron Paul, you, or any Ron Paul supporter for that matter. My apologizes.
