i don't know abouthe whinning but your right.

i think he's forgeting to very important things. one you can't lose money on a game you didn't sale. 2 used owners still buy DLC.

speculation of sells and profit don't count. you either sold it or you didn't and once a retailer sells it and buys it back its theres and no lone ther property of dev's and pub's i i suggest he starts gettine use to lossing money he never had.

glad the game sold 2m units.

You, sir, officially have more sense than this guy.  And I suppose if multiple people in the same household want to play the game, he'd like them all to buy their own copy?

By the way, somehow the book, furniture, and toy industries (along with pretty much every other one) has survived for thousands of years despite people having the audacity to *gasp* SELL SOMETHING THEY OWN!

This!

I dont think this guy knows whats he's talking about. How exactly do u lose money if your game is bought used?

every market has a "used" counter-part. you just sort of need to deal with it. the best thing they can do is provide enticements such as pre-order bonus content to make people want to buy it new over used. ...or go completely digital although i don't think the market is ready for that quite yet.

He's right. None of my guests are allowed to sit in my couch.

This...it really annoys me when developers say that.

i always wonder if game developers are really so stupid? first of all the used market is everywhere for all kinds of products. because people buy a lot used (cars/games/toys) they have more money to spend for more products.

for example if i buy a new heavy rain i do this maybe because i could sell an other game i don't need anymore on ebay or another market.

he calculates:

2million sold and 1 million not sold because of the used market.

but they have to calculate:

1 million used market games so maybe 500k people waited for the used copy instead of buying it new (the others half wouldn't buy it otherwise) and of the 2 million new copies something like 250k bought it only because they got money for another used game. not to speak about other used markets for other products away of the games market where people save money which they can spend for videogames.

sure these are just fiction numbers but that's how they should calulate it not like a 5 years old child with no clue about how the world works.

maybe the time will come a game developer will read one of these threads to get it in the brain that they all calculate it totally wrong. and i did not even mention dlc's for example which they can sell to both groups of people who buy the game, the new buyers and the used copy buyers which means they sell more dlc's than they would without the used copy market.

Gawd can you imagine the other countless amounts of millions of dollars is lost to people sitting in the same room, watching the game being played --- Those GAWD-DAMNED thieves are exeriencing their game without paying for it also!

On the flip side we could argue that the second hand market enabled him to gain 500k-1M people who enjoyed the title and possibly grow the install base for a future title.

Without the 2nd hand market who is to say those people would have purchased the game at all? I know plenty of people who buy a game used from Gamestop, finish it and then return it within the 7-14 day window.

No, you haven't lost anything, because that money was never yours. Do you feel guilty about buying used cars, or clothes from charity shops?
