Can Disney beat Universal's record 2015 domestic gross - $2.445 billion?

It will fall short of tha... 4 13.33%

Finding Dory, Doctor Stra... 20 66.67%

It's going to be very cl... 6 20.00%

Total:30

With the success of The Avengers, Disney's decision to buy Marvel for $4 Billion is looking more and more like an amazing deal.

Now that The Hunger Games made $372,450,000 I say the changes for it to make over $400 million at the domestic box office is over 90% now.

Good thing Paramount Pictures actually produced it since Walt Disney Pictures has a terrible record so far this year with John Carter being on of the biggest bombs in recent years.  Their next big movie Lone Ranger could potentially bomb big time also.

A Johnny Depp film bombing? Hah, good one

Armie Hammer is the main actor and he isn't a household name.  Also $215 million is a very huge budget for a western and who knows how much they will spend on advertising it I hope they don't go nuts again and spend another $100 million on that like they did with John Carter.  Just did a little research The Rum Diary was a bomb and Jack and Jill barely made a slight profit those where two terrible movies though but Rango should have made more money seeing that The Smurfs made more then twice as much at the box office.

It's a bit more complicated than that though:

But yeah Disney isn't banking quiet as much because of that Paramount deal with Marvel.

I'm not really worried for The Lone Ranger.

It's another Gore Verbinski/Johnny Depp movie (like Pirates of the Caribbean).

Even if Johnny Depp isn't the main character they will still make sure to focus on his character for the marketing push.

Johnny Depp has a very strong international popularity so even if it fails at the box office in the domestic market it will triumph oversea.

The development hell it went through is a bit worrying though.

Weekend Forecast (May 4-6):
1. The Avengers - $172.5 million
2. Think Like a Man - $8.6 million (-51%)
3. The Pirates! - $6.6 million (-41%)
4. The Hunger Games - $6.3 million (-42%)
5. Five-Year Engagement - $5.8 million (-45%)

The Avengers has already been winning over foreign audiences, as it opened in many markets last week and has earned a huge $281.1 million through its first eight days in theaters. That's more than any of these characters' previous movies earned in their entire run with the exception of Iron Man 2, though it will pass that movie's $311.5 million on Friday.

They are underestimating THG..

How does that opening weekend number for Avengers compare to TDK, DH2?
Rank Title (click to view) Studio Opening* % of Total Theaters Avg. Total Gross^ Date**
1 Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 WB $169,189,427 44.4% 4,375 $38,672 $381,011,219 7/15/2011
2 The Dark Knight WB $158,411,483 29.7% 4,366 $36,283 $533,345,358 7/18/2008
3 The Hunger Games LGF $152,535,747 40.8% 4,137 $36,871 $374,317,455 3/23/2012
4 Spider-Man 3 Sony $151,116,516 44.9% 4,252 $35,540 $336,530,303 5/4/2007

If we adjust for inflation,we have :

1 The Dark Knight WB $172,752,400 29.7% 4,366 $39,568 $581,628,700 7/18/2008
2 Spider-Man 3 Sony $171,982,900 44.9% 4,252 $40,447 $382,998,900 5/4/2007
3 Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 WB $166,845,500 44.4% 4,375 $38,136 $375,732,700 7/15/2011
4 Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest BV $162,140,200 32.0% 4,133 $39,230 $506,040,100 7/7/2006
5 Spider-Man Sony $154,772,700 28.4% 3,615 $42,813 $544,065,600 5/3/2002

So basically they are expecting The Avengers to be just as big as TDK was in it's opening weekend.
