Forums - Sony Discussion - PS4 in 18 months?

"Beyond that, current technologies don't feasibly support the idea of a new console. High-definition 1080p is as good as it gets. It's just not possible to make games look any better yet. The Wii U ran straight into this complaint, and that's why it's a catch-up machine, not a quantum leap. It's really the best Nintendo -- or anyone -- can do at the moment."

I'm so sick of statements like that. PCs run HD resolutions since the 90s. Does that mean games don't look better now than Q3 Arena did in 1600x1200?

It just doesn't make any sense to measure image quality in pixels.

There are so many areas in which the graphics could be improved A LOT before even thinking about increasing the resolution further.

Framerate, tearing, draw distance, texture size, texture quality, number of polygons, proper use of image enhancers like AF or AA, lighting, modern shaders,...

SO much room for improvements.

I didn't think there was ever doubt that the PS4 would release within 6 months of the WiiU launch

There is quite a lot of doubt of that, and most will continue to doubt that

Agree with Tube82 here. Sometimes its like people think 1080p makes a game automatically good looking. Saints Row on Xbox360 was 1080p afair. 1080p adds to a good picture but also tons of other things. I prefer proper AA and good Lighting to 1080p any day. ofcourse 1080p and 8xAA and all the eye candy would be ideal.

To OP:
I am ready for the next gen and aslong its a substantial improvment, bring it on.

personally what i've been thinking is that microsoft and sony should delay their next consoles until the tech to provide a noticeable generational leap gets cheaper... so that their consoles won't retail for exceedingly high prices ( like the $600 ps3 )

Good point. There is no need to rush their release, and if the productions costs would be lower, resulting in a cheaper price, even better.

I wouldn't be surprised to see PS4 on the market in 18 months. While agree PS3 is just hitting its stride and it hasn't made up the profits it lost at launch, that doesn't mean the console could last long in a new generation.

If WiiU launches and even more so if the next X-Box launches, both supposedly happening this year then Sony would need to launch or be left behind. Now they could stick with the PS3 a while and then release a more powerful system then the competition in say 2014. However this would alienate developers and consumers.

If PS4 was drastically more powerful then WiiU and Nex-Box then developers would need to produce games exclusively for their console. That or port games which look and perform pretty inferior to Sony's expectations. Also Nintendo and Microsoft will have built up a user base of several million users and it would be extremely difficult for Sony to play catch up. Not to mention Nintendo's five year cycle would end in 2017 and the next system would come out leaving Sony to cut their generation short or play catch up yet again.

So while I agree PS3 is a great product and just now hitting its strides. If Nintendo and Microsoft both launch soon then Sony needs to launch a response with PS4. The upgrade may not look as drastic as PS3 from PS2. But Sony can't afford to loose market share and developer support!

A lot of it depends on what Nintendo does. If they pull 3DS again and offer us product slightly better than previous generation of competitors with added gimick then Sony and Microsft will be able to take their time with new machines.

If they go to more NES/Gamecube aproach then both MS and Sony will be forced to react and rush their next gen consoles.

Thank you! I get so frustrated when I hear that argument... There is SO much more room for improvement, and as technology advances, there will always be more and more.

What I find most pathetic is how EA recently said they wouldn't even know what to do with a more powerful console. Yet... at the same time... they're launching Battlefield 3 on the consoles and the PC and it's a way bigger game on the PC due to not having the consoles' restrictions...

18 months my ass is my statement, I sure as hell won't buy one when I have so many games I've not even started.
