Changing PS3s

Forums - Sony Discussion - Changing PS3s

Right, so I have 3 PS3s in my house for various reasons, and I want to change my active PS3

So I currently use an old fat PS3, and want to swap to the slimline PS3. The easiest way to change I assume would be to swap HDDs as my fat one has a larger one that the slim one, which is a fairly simple procedure

So my question is, do I need to do anything else, as I know that some things (I am thinking Dragon Age 1) are registered to consoles?

You can't just swap out the harddrives, your PS3 forces a format.  You have to do an ethernet transfer.  Can't remember where in the settings it is.  Probably with the format utility.

So the best option would be to back up everything to an external hard drive, then restore to the new PS3? Or else I would have to go via my 3rd PS3?

yeah it is in the system settings below format and backup and it transfers copy-protected stuff too apparently so dragon age should move as well.

correct me if I am wrong
stop me if I am bias
I love a good civilised debate (but only if we can learn something).

you could do that but it would be better to use the data transfer utility just below the backup one.

Data transfer to what? I want to keep using the same HDD, just on a different PS3

Whenever you put a new HDD into a PS3, it forces a format, so you can't switch the HDDs between the two. Like mentioned before, you can hook up the two PS3s with an ethernet cable, which allows you to transfer the contents from one PS3 to another (I'm not sure if the slim PS3 will force a format with this option; it's called Data Transfer Utility or something like that).

oh yeah, then making a backup would be the easiest but i think you will lose the protected stuff that way.

There is a third option..

Move the HDD from the slim into my spare fat PS3, then transfer stuff from my current PS3 into that, and then transfer into the slim with the HDD from my current PS3 in that finally?

Or I could just stick with the current PS3 that I have

what about psn plus, can you save all your games on that,

then i assume download all back on,you can do the copyright ones then

otherwise its the back up drive or data transfer which i guess is no use if you want the same HD
