but the lateral movement is nonexistant from what I have seen in the game.

For me it works well, for instance taking cover at the side of an entrance, just aim the analog stick towards the other side where you want to go and hit the cover button and Drake will take cover at the other side. This always works for me, same with boxes, pillars, walls, etc.

Even the forward cover movement is broken.

Maybe you have trouble aiming well? I do remember that Gears felt more sticky when taking cover, for some this may be a plus and others it's not...

A nice touch I like is walking + aiming, you can easily change the point of view having Drake placed on either the right or left side of the screen by pushing the analog stick.

Yeah, I have trouble aiming. Only been playing shooters for 15 years now.

Anyway, you might have better luck with your play style but the cover system in Uncharted just doesn't work well for me. I'm definitely a "run n gun, move n shoot n move" type of player and need the cover system to work right every time or I end up dead a lot.

Needless to say, I end up dead a bunch in Uncharted and if not dead, badly wounded, causing me to pause a lot which I do not like. Give me the Gears system every day of the week but maybe that just fits my style better... I always hear people complain about accidentally sticking to walls in Gears and that never happens to me at all.

Obviously I'm not the only one with issues about the cover system... Twesterm complained about it also and so has one of my friends. Something just doesn't click right with me.

Part of the difference between Gears and Uncharted is the guns and enemies. Gears takes a lot of shots to bring people down and they're larger and slower moving than the thinner target profiles of the enemies in Uncharted. Add to that the fact that enemies in Uncharted move around a lot to not only dodge, but also when they get hit so it makes any constant fire at them a bad choice and you'll run out of ammo fast. Hell, comare like 90 AK bullets to over 600 from the chainsaw gun from Gears.

Again, the Gears of War system is more robust, I think. However, the stickiness of it can be a little annoying to me sometimes but it's still a nice system. Uncharted isn't as sticky and I actually liked it not automatically going to cover as much as Gears does. This way, I can choose if I want to go into cover instead of being forced into it, but it was still good enough with jumping to the left and right to get to the other side of a door way for example. I also didn't have much of any problems with not having things I couldn't take cover behind either and I don't recall that ever happening more than once or twice.

Well Uncharted and Gears play a bit different compared to most past shooters. Maybe you are too used to how Gears is played, I meant more with regard to aiming cover-roll-cover than aimed shooting.

BTW I have also been playing 3rd person over-the-shoulder camera view shooters since the 80s with games like Cabal,  Space Harrier and Narco Police, or from first person view Operation Wolf / Thunderbolt and Exterminator.

For me, I didn't consider the game mechanics, or whether it was innovative or not, or what it did different. The reason I said it was my 2007 GOTY, is because (for me) it was the funnest game.

That's the most important part of any game to me, and I can honestly say that this game was the funnest for me to play last year, disregarding anything else.

Can I have your autograph?

Anyways none of those games are in anyway similar to the 3rd person shooters described in this thread, especially Space Harrier. I mean, WTF? Space Harrier is one of the most widely known on-rails shooters.

But if you really want to stretch the meaning of a third person shooter to the breaking point then throw in Contra; which means that plenty of people here having been playing 3rd person shooters just as long as you, such as myself.

But I digress. I've only played the demo of Uncharted thus far, but I also found the cover system ungainly. Maybe it takes a lot of time to get used to, but its just not as smooth as GRAW, RSV or Gears. It was also odd when the Ak was practically useless, booth in damage and accuracy - even in single fire.

Outside of that its really pretty and very well put together, but it seems like they should have spent a bit more time with the cover mechanic and could have used some focus groups to play test the weapons.

Well, I just beat the game and the ending was disappointing. Unfortunately, it turns into a "monkey want a banana" Dragon's Lair button-pushing. Ugh. Why, Naughty Dog, why?

Other than the few rather minor complaints I have about the game, it's a very good game. I want to get a full write-up done in the next few days but it's a solid experience, though far too short (again, I sound like a broken record nowadays).

Man I wish I had a ps3. I'd like to try this game. Hope you enjoyed it :)

From my memory, consoles games for the most part has always been this short. One of my favorites was Super Metroid which only lasted a few hours but I don't remember how many time I play it. Castlevania:SOTN was a another great but short.

Of course back in the good ole days some games took a little longer since if you died you had to go back to the beginning of that level. Uncharted and COD4 would have taken longer if everytime you died you had to restart the level.

I enjoyed Larry Croft Uncharted as well.

Of course there are striking similarities to be found in such games:

Narco Police

Of course not very advanced for the genre yet, but just look at the screenshots. You walk through 3D tunnels aiming your gun at badguys from a 3rd person perspective camera view.
