Forums - Nintendo Discussion - 80% DS owners are 8-16?

I wouldn't be surprised. While there is Brain Training for the elderly and all, the majority of DS games are marketed towards kids. Also consider how much more time kids have to play video games than adults.

I totally sympathise with these figures. Stop being such defendant fanboys and think logically.

Logically they are incorrect, in US, it may be younger, but in Japan and others sales seem to trend older

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

I'd definitely believe the stat for US, I don't know about foreign countries. Most of the people I know in the US that are younger own a DS, most of the older people I know don't own a handheld or if they do, own a psp.

Well, I now only have access to a PS3 & 360...Plan on buying a wii soon (lol, if I can ever find one available!) but will probably wait until some of the major RPG's come out like Dragon Quest & Tales, etc.

Anyhow, I'm so far behind in games to play that I'm not in a huge hurry (lol, haven't even gotten a chance to finish God of War II yet!)

I believe those stats. Not trying to start a war here but aren't most of there games kids games like Mario, Nintendogs, Zelda, etc. The only game i can think of that would appeal to adults is the Brain Training.

Whats the matter ... DS owners got offended that they got the kiddie toy ? Be happy that your handheld of choice is selling batter than the PSP , but lets face it , the DS is successfull thanks to the youngr audience ...

I googled it. It must be true that 80% DS owners are kids.

The second hit proves it,
http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&hs=Wb6&q=average+age+of+DS+owners&btnG=Search&meta=

LOL that really tickled me.

Personally, I would definitely disagree with this statistic, unless it was for America I guess.  I know two people that own a DS, one 15, the other 21.

mayby give us a link to the page that proves it because I alone find a forum...

AT OP:

Well hard for me to state if the numbers are wrong or not, but I am clearly not 8-16 years at least. I think we will find that a large number of DS users probarbly are between 8-16 but me personally think that 80% sounds a little bit wrong (even that those numbers probarbly is for USA not Japan), Reason? Well just follow the steps below and I shall try to explain.

1, 80% 8-16 years DS owners = 16,5 million. That leave 4,1 million in 0-8 and 16-infinity.

2, DS is probably one of the more popular gaming devices for kids, giving that we probarbly have at least 1 million users in the age group 0-8. That is pretty low I think but hey why not.

3, Brain Training (the first one) has sold in USA alone 2,23 millions (according to vgchartz). I belive that at least 90% of those sales are in the age above 16. Thats 2 millions users above 16.

4, That leaves 1! million extra users in the age group above 16, I don't know but are people actualy beliving that there isn't more than 1 million old school Mario fans in that age group that bought a DS for NSMB? I did...

The problem with the articel is that it doesn't state how the analyst, Wedbush Morgan (Patcher), how they did get the numbers. I personally think that the DS is huge with children and that we might have around 65-75% at 0-16. However I have problem to see that 80% of the users should be 8-16 just looking at my friends and some forums (not facts that either). Ds is a heaven for us that grow up with 2D gaming and that is missing those times.

robjoh, I'm guessing Galaki's post was one of sarcasm.

Well he started the thread so I thought he had found some intresting info.

Nah I think he was pointing out how little proof whatsoever there is of this claim. Quite a lot of claims by single sources start new threads, there are those who believe, and those who don't.

Personally I'd wait for a better source.
