If they are smart, they would do a total reboot.

I agree; a reboot is exactly what the Metroid series needs.

It's the best choice they have. Actually they only have two of them:

  • continue the story from Metroid Fusion... and take it to a newer level/style
  • Total reboot: It takes the still strong brand and try to fit it on a new audience.

I would go with the reboot. Easiest and possibly the most profitable. That's very Nintendo.

Honestly the story in Metroid is so loosely tied as it is that I don't see continuing the storyline of Metroid Fusion as a very good choice. I don't even totally understand the overlying Metroid canon.

The reason Mario and Zelda are so popular is because they continue to have great gameplay mechanics as well as new inventive takes on that gameplay. Examples are the intuitive level designs in Super Mario Galaxy and the the addition of new weapons in each consecutive Zelda.

What Metroid needs to do is make a reboot, stop trying to make sense within the old Metroid canon (there can still be a good story, the stories just don't have to be consecutive), and focus on the core gameplay of Metroid while finding ways to make the series feel fresh.

To further expand on how I think future Metroid games should be story-wise, I believe Nintendo should do with Metroid what Square attempts to do with Final Fantasy (though the story in FF always seems to be the same): do not connect story of the games, but instead invent a new individual adventure for Samus every time.

Do you mean without Metroids then? Just the Space Pirats and their evil plans for the universe?

In order to include the metroid, you would have to need some kind of connecting story. They are very powerfull and also very rare. So when one appears in a new adventure, you can't just pretent it's normal.

That could mean that the reboot would make metroid more normal. So it's normal they can appear all over the universe - with the space pirats.

One alternative idea i would think off:

You could also link the metroid directly to Samus. Meaning the metroids aren't really a weapon for pirats but an asset/ally/weapon for Samus herself. That way you could take the Space pirats as the super villans, all over the universe, without needing the metroid linked to their schemes. It frees up an entire range of stories and cites. And It would still make the name metroid relevant.

That could work... Now that I think about it there really is a ton of potential to make the Metroid franchise a much bigger seller; Nintendo just has yet to unlock it.

I think what Metroid needs is what Ganondorf is to Zelda and what Bowser is to Mario: an arch-nemesis for Samus. Sure Metroid Prime worked for Metroid Prime, but that series of games is over. Ridley has always been around, but I don't think Ridley could be the root of all evil icon that Metroid needs. Space Pirates can't really be this either as they are what they are called: pirates who want to plunder the universe. I don't find them evil enough, and they really don't have a leader.

I think a reboot should see the Space Pirates being led by some cunning ultra pirate, who has Ridley under his control. This leader, unlike the rest of the Space Pirates, has more than conquest on his mind: he's truly "evil", at least in the sense that Ganondorf or Bowser is.

Yeah, you're right there. Ridley does come over as a second in command. A new supervillan would be cool. They could give mother brain a body again, like other M, but then permanently. In a really menacing form then!

Since she would be a mix of computer/person, she would survive a lot of potential deaths at the end of each adventure. That's good for keeping the "evil" alive to threaten the universe. Like Ganon.

Exactly! That would make for a great reboot. Like I said, the potential for greatness the Metroid franchise can achieve only needs to be tapped by Nintendo.

they mentioned its 25th check it out on twitter NintendoAmerica did

Roma is right, this is old, and rather irrelevant since it comes from the Animal Crossing/Mario Kart guy

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

a bit off topic, but you know who I wouldn't mind having a go at Metroid? Arika, no kidding.

The whole Zoom-In mechanic in endless ocean 2 seems perfectly fitted to a more "organic" form of scanning, not to mention allowing for some beautiful set-pieces. The visor itself would merely point out that there is a point of interest (like the bright yellow orbs in EO2).

Furthermore, I think they proved with that title that they definitely know how to execute exploration and discovery properly, not to mention mastering the art of building tension and immersion.
They were even able to integrate a long and interesting story into the game without intruding on the gameplay and atmosphere.

The game had upgradeable equipment, nonlinear gameplay, huge complex levels full of nooks and crannies to explore, tons and tons of side-quests, living environments and eco-systems with hundreds of different creatures, and much more.
Perfect Metroid stuff, there.

Incidentally, Wii owners who haven't played the game are really missing out!

Anybody else get that kind of vibe when playing the game?

Until you've played it, every game is a system seller!

Apparently, they look at VGChartz articles...

anyway, this is good news. I can't personally wait to see if they do a total reboot.

My personal hint is only for this: please, make the game in first person, it will allow more exploration like the Prime series.

Good news, I hope the game keeps the other M kind of feeling... The VA was weak, but everything else was amazing...

Whatever they do, I will be happy. But a new adventure with new villains etc would be best, and FP Prime style will probably make more people buy the game these days.
