Forums - Gaming Discussion - Jack Thompson Blames VA Shooting on Games

OMG!!! AND THE WII PROBABLY MADE THIS CRISIS EVEN WORSE BECAUSE NOW IT HELPS TEACH KIDS HOW TO AIM!!! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE, NINTENDO!!?

ha, but seriously. the shooting is a damn shame, and I feel bad for the school, kids, parents, and all involved (including the shooter, its just too bad whatever was wrong) but do not go blamming it on video games. Ive talked about this before. It is all parenting. I love FPS, but I dont want to act out on it in real life.  Parents leave baby sitting to video games. You see little kids now-a-days?  I saw a kid who was 5 years old in Walmart. He was bitching because his mom was only letting him get 4 effing games. The kids reasoning: 3 of the games were for the Wii and only 1 for the PS3, so he should be allowed to get at least 1 more to help even it out. Would you believe rather than putting her foot down, the mother went ahead and let him buy another PS3 game? Spoiled, but worse than that. The kid is 5 years old, he has a Wii and PS3 and his mom is buying 5 games at a time for him. Dont try and tell me she doesnt use the Wii and PS3 to baby sit him? Whenever she is around, it doesnt matter, the video games will stop the kid from bothering her. Then the kid grows up and takes a gun to school and has a field day with it before taking his own life. The greiving mother at a podium durring a press conference says, "It was those video games... This has to stop...."

Huh... Its so easy to have video games baby sit your kids, and then its just as easy to give video games full credit for what happened, rather than admiting it was literally ALL YOUR FAULT. Not even 90% your fault and 10% video games, NO, ALL YOUR FAULT. A kid, like 90% of us, can play lots and lots of violent video games and still be, overall, a good kid and at least never dream of doing something that stupi, just like... 89% of us. (I'm watching you Kwaad! haha J/k, Its obvious xbox260N64ps3 or whatever his name was, would be the one to snap.  )

God, I feel so sorry for everyone involved. I so wish Jack was there himself - he just doesn't deserve to live.

Just have to say, Im pretty glad I don't live in the US. Guns have always freaked me out (sole purpose of the device is to KILL people/creatures), and we will never allow guns into our community as a whole here in Australia.

I think this will be the end of Jack, and its about time.

@Darc Requiem:

You mean you're "pissed B3YOND!"

Actually, there is a very good chance he will lose his license in Florida.  Let's hope they take away his license for good wherever he goes.

@shams:

Have you seen "Bowling for Columbine"? If not, I would recommend viewing it.

Canada allows citizens to carry firearms, but in terms of per-capita deaths due to firearms, the US takes the cake by a wide, wide margin. Hell, it takes the entire bakery franchise!

It's not the just the availability of firearms. My native country also allows the purchase of firearms, which you can purchase in department stores, no less. However, deaths related to firearms are pretty low compared to the other "more popular" forms of homicide (public lynching, for example).

It is just absolutely horrible what happened today and it still has not sunk in for me yet. Exact details and names haven't even been released yet and this guy is trying to throw blame around already. It's the worst shooting in U.S. history and he is targeting video games of all things. No one said the shooter was a student, but I think the problem is deeper than just a violent video game. This guy is truly pathetic. I feel sorry for all those who died in todays massacre. Things like this shouldn't happen.

I live in Virginia and have a friend who goes to Virginia Tech and yes, JT is a scumbag. But it's nothing new; he "predicts" that every person who does this sort of thing is "obsessed" with violent games. Of course, we only hear back on it when his prediction has any degree of truth to it (oh my God, they played DOOM a few times!) and not when he's completely wrong.

Although games may set some people off, surely they are not the root of the problem for the vast majority. I'm sure violent movies and music lyrics set certain people off as well, but nobody sane is calling for those to be banned. Certain people have these sorts of mental problems. But consider the crime rate in Japan, where games are more popular than in the U.S. Then consider the crime rate in the U.S. rose dramatically before video games became available to consumers, then dropped significantly during the 1990s when the game market expanded by leaps and bounds.

EDIT: I would also advise against viewing any Michael Moore "documentary" unless doing so with a VERY critical eye.  I won't say more as that would probably hijack this thread, but that needed to be said.

@elprincipe:

He's biased all right, but I thought Columbine was much more "balanced" than Fahrenheit - I personally hate Dubya, but that movie was just propaganda.

Edit: I recommended the movie because of that part about the statistics of gun-related deaths per country and how gun legalization or prohibition is not the reason behind such killings - it's far deeper than that.

But of course... several times :)

Haven't seen Farenheit 911 yet though (heard it wasn't as good). And yes, I take everything *everyone* says with a grain of salt (Im sort of notorious around here for not listening to anyone - just trying to make my own mind up based on "facts"... as shocking as that concept is! :P).
