Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Rumour: Iwata takes 50% Salary Cut due to 3DS

I think Nintendo is making a mistake, just by not taking a risk and trying something new. I don't think consumers wanted a DS with 3D. I don't think consumers wanted the Wii U.
For the portable, I think I would have rather seen something that didn't look almost exactly like the DS. Maybe just one screen, maybe multitouch, it would be fine if it had 3D, but just something that doesn't use the idea of two screens. I think the consumers are tired of looking at two screens. I kind of am. I've been playing my DS since 2004, and the ideas for games have kind of run out. The DS revolutionized handheld gaming. I was expecting a similar feeling of awe with the next portable, but the 3DS doesn't give me any of that.
Nintendo is all about innovation and new experiences, but I think that the experiences with the 3DS and the Wii U won't be enough to draw in the crowds like the DS and Wii did.

Wow this just reminds me why I'm such a loyal Nintendo consumer. The company cares about its games, consoles and consumers more then any other company I know. The leadership takes responsability for its actions and even the great like Miyamoto who could and should be making millions upon millions a year settles for a lower salary similiar to that of his other employees. Nintendo is a very noble company.

Unlike Rol and some other users, I still like the idea of WiiU, I just think the name is a stupid idea. Rol's point of Wii sales still being high and the console still thriving. Software sales have plummited and software is a major part of Nintendo's profit margins. I think Nintendo should discontinue Wii when WiiU launches and sell it as cheap as possible while still maintaining a small profit.

I also think Nintendo could have done far better at launching 3DS if they had a proper ad campaign. Consumers needed to be informed as to what a 3DS was and why they need one. Instead Nintendo spent very little on advertising it and expected it to sell itself. Infact Reggie said Nintendo outsourced marketing, what a stupid idea.

So yah Nintendo execs deserve this pay cut, they did a horrible job launching 3DS. It wasn't the hardware that was the problem it was the execution of the launch!

That's not a high enough price to pay. I would have prefered it, if he kept his money and announced New Super Mario Bros. 3DS along with some other true Nintendo games instead, as a sign of capitulation. Plus, Wii U being entirely reconsidered.

Spot on.  I hate the pomposity of the "noble gesture" bullshit.  Just sort it out, thats your job and thats what you get paid for.

Also it isnt exactly a hardship to take a 50% when you are earning so much is it?  The very fact that he can can offer to take a 50% pay cut means that it doesnt affect him at all.... If you are a worker then taking a 50% paycut is impossible.

Empty gesture and actually a sign of weakness to the markets.

Yup. He should just run the company into the ground while taking bonuses and then run away with a hefty severance package.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Yall on vgchartz are more naive than I thought. $170 probably was the original planned price for the 3ds. So do u guys realize what Nintendo have just done?
THEY HAVE JUST FORCED 4 MILLION+ PEOPLE TO BUY $80 worth IN DOWNLOADABLE CONTENT!!!!
and at the same time now 3ds looks like a steal, and Sony is now caught off-guard. They are true financial geniuses.
All this talk of losing money(which provides great cover/misdirection BTW) are totally natural for whats going on with the R&D for a freaking new console. Which is totally unrelated to the 3ds, they are in no trouble whatsoever.. (um they cant lose money on something that sells at $80+-? profit).
And all this salary cut BS is just an act.

And the beauty of all this? U cant dare bring this 'speculation 'up without sounding like a loony fanboy HAHAHAHAHAHA

*sigh*

Don't laugh. Or.. let's laugh together. :)

I was thinking exactly the same. And the more I think of it the more plausible it seems.

I think they chose a high price first and then they'd lower it when they get to know Sony's price. Now they're 10.000 Yen (15.000 resp.) lower than Sony for the Vita, which costs 25.000 or 30.000 Yen. And that's a friggin huge difference.

No... he should just take his pay and do his job....

people/businesses make mistakes.

If you make a mistake do you give your pay back to your employer?

Nintendo as a whole is taking a hit, as in, bleeding money on 3DS.

He and the execs are taking the cut instead of firing the lowly peons. What's wrong with that?

Only in America where execs take a large chunk of bonus while the company makes negative income.

Please dont try to talk about subjects that you clearly have no clue about.

And what company are you running that you know so much about?

I run a company that employs 20 people and turns over £xmillion (with in excess of a 50% profit margin)

So, $1M from Iwata alone and the rest of them execs at 30%. How many millions would come out of that?

If that's not a lot of money, then Nintendo must be using Zimbabwe money.

Nintendo have about $6 or 7bn just sat in cash reserves..... just so you know.

source?

And why is it offensive for them to take a paycut again?

It isn't offensive... its just pointless and shows a weakness the markets will not like driving share prices further down...  as can be seen.

Source? lol....  go check the accounts that are public record and are issued every quarter.

Funny that the burden of proof is on me.

jesus...

here:

So cash or near cash assets = 1,089,381 million yen

1,089,381,000,000 yen is $14bn

So, you're saying, Nintendo is sitting on $14B cash, double what you have previously stated?

I don't know about you, but if Nintendo has so much cash accumulated, common sense tells me that Iwata knows what he's doing by taking the salary cut.

Do you insist they take bonuses just like the Western CEO's while the company started running into a wall?
