I know a late response but my reaction counts for everyone in this thread. Many even Nintendo fans called the first year sales of the DS troublesome, in fact after the first year people really start to believe DS could fail and that PSP could pwn it... While it is for sure an achievement that 3DS will sell more than DS in his first year it rather gives me a bad taste... |
While the first year of the DS may have been "troublesome", beyond the price difference (which had a major influence), you are not taking one other major thing into account - that in this sales aligned comparison, the DS has already had its holiday season, while the 3DS holiday season is still ahead of it. The combination of this and its initial price are the main reasons why it took the 3DS time to surpass DS sales. It seems quite certain now that once the holidays are reached (any week now...), 3DS 1st year sales will not simply surpass but own DS 1st year sales.
Currently Playing: Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked, Professor Layton and the Curious Village
Anticipating: Xenoblade, The Last Story, Mario Kart 7, Rayman Origins, Zelda SS, Crush3D, Tales of the Abyss 3DS, MGS:Snake Eater 3DS, RE:Revelations, Time Travellers, Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney, Luigi's Mansion 2, MH TriG, DQ Monsters, Heroes of Ruin
All those people that voted for DS will eat crow.

And that is all I had to say. Again passing something that was not doing great at that time is almost a great achievement for some. And I took all of that in comparison....And?

Well... While doing better than DS first year may not be the greatest achievement of all time, I think the sense of a great achievement is because of all the "dooooommmed" and "bomb" proclamations that surrounded the 3DS. For a supposedly doomed console to pass its predecessor's first year is subjectively an achievement.

Nom nom nom! Totally worth it.
I'm going to celebrate by scouring the internet for Super Mario 3D Land trailers and looking at attach rates.
Love and tolerate.
Something to boast about for Nintendo. This is great news.
“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.
Thanks for the thread. It sheds some light that the so called video game "analyst" have their heads up their asses. A 5 year old could predict the market better than them.
