With recent report of 3DS sales and Price cut I decided to see if the system was really doing bad compared to the DS. The DS had a rough start compared to the GBA and people use this as a reason why 3DS sales are low. So let's see how they compare. As of right now

3DS in 21 weeks DS in 21 weeks

*DS is the week ending of April 16th 2005

The 3DS outsells DS by +5,226

The Overall Gap is  -1,372,414

I hope to do this every week. This comparison is just to see how close nintendo can get to DS numbers

Another thing to consider is that the DS debuted in the holiday season in NA and Japan and much later in other markets (Feb-March for Europe/Australia) while the 3DS launched everywhere in March.

Great idea though! We definitely need something like this around here to put things in clearer perspective.

It launched in February in Japan. ;-p

Just need to check but you arn't just compairing worldwide totals from 'week one' are you, cause the DS had a much more staggered launch then the 3DS so your 26 week figure would include much less of the DS's European sales compared to 3DS.

On the other hand the original DS would have had a holiday period however much sales that might have brought in.

I'm using Wikipedia as a source so it may very well be wrong.

I just checked it out and it has it correct! Feb. is listed for Japan, though all the others are March so you probably just glanced right passed it. 0_0 hehe ;-p

I just checked it again and I'm still seeing Dec. 2 for Japan and Nov. 21 for NA. I'm looking at the right info bar in this article:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_ds

Well there's your problem...

I'm talking about the 3ds

^Didn't the DS get a crappy first year too? so 3DS ^^

OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoO

DS started off slow until Nintendogs/Brainage was released. Then it exploded.

3DS will now be at a respectable price for what it is. Now it needs the software.

A comparison to the GBA which launched in a similar time of the year would be even less favorable.

Japan 21 weeks in
GBA March 21
3DS February 26

GBA - 2,958,748
3DS - 1,259,505

Mixing Media Create and VGC for week 22 shows a 77,325 gain for the GBA (109,151 vs 31,826)

America 16 weeks in
GBA June 11
3DS March 27

GBA - 2,305,071
3DS - 1,097,629

55,542 favor for the GBA (79,930 vs 24,388)

Europe 17 weeks in
GBA June 22
3DS March 25

GBA - 1,120,721
3DS - 944,112

23,593 favor for the GBA (42,412 vs 18,819)

Overall

GBA - 6,384,540
3DS - 3,301,246

Also at the OP, the 3DS hasn't been out for 26 weeks anywhere, so are you sure your numbers are correct?

EDIT: I'm getting 5,043,808 for the 21st/16th/17th Japanese/American/European week.

Also 153,577 for that 'week' (which is actually three seperate weeks for each territory).

I think these figures ultimately paint a bleaker picture for the 3DS thus far, it's being heavily outsold against the DS despite the DS itself having a pretty unspectacular launch (Evenish with PSP I think?) until the DSlite remodel + key software. Early demand is pretty worrying for the device imo, but a $249 price tag was always going to be a stretch.

Treading back into old generations numbers does help remind us though this thing is a marathon and not a race. The 3DS can recover but thus far I think it's very difficult to take any positives. We should get a decent idea of how important software is this christmas, and whether $170 is still too much of a price for the 3DS.

I still see the thing struggling at $170 though, I think the thing needs software that can have the same sort of impact that Brain Training, Nintendogs, NSMB's did for the DS and thus far I've not seen that in what they're making for the 3DS. I think Nintendo have lost their direction a bit so far with the 3DS - they've plenty of time to make software to turn things around though... but they can't afford to give Sony a sniff either.

3DS

The reason it's so skewed towards the DS ATM is because (I think) it launched it November. We'll see how it goes it the holiday

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.
