Forums - Gaming Discussion - Another take on DRM/Online pass

warning the follow post may(will) contain spelling and gammar errors. Can't be bothered going over it, so have a field day grammar nazi's

Fought ubisoft would have common sense to put behind the disaster of a DRM for PC titles that is permanent online connection to play? Nope and there next title Driver will have it. Being the case there other titles like far cry and assassins creed will certainly have it. Hopefully they aren't adding mandatory online for there upcoming delayed for PC title From Dust because its blantly obivious that the title will sell far more on pc that on xbl or psn.

But from this news i must say that this form of DRM is by far the worst DRM there could possible be because you know who benefits from this? the priates who get to play this without internet connection when they break it and free the mandatory internet connection. While the paying customer gets shafted, which is explains why DRM is pointless but Priacy is a problem. I am against priacy because it just breaks the heart of a games developer who pour sweat and tears into it only for people to take and not reward them for there efforts, especially when most do it and not many buys the product. Game developers deserve more money that musicans or movie makers because the shear effort required is so great for many titles. And to top it off they aren't really payed well unless the game is a sucess.

But the best thing to do is to hit the priates with guilt by creating such a awesome game that they will feel ashamed to say that they priated it. People would find it really hard to speak to friends about a awesome game they sold, only the really twisted gloat about stealing something, most theifs hide in shame what they done. So the when creating a online experience allow the priates on it because not only does it greatly improves the community with more numbers but they will feel bad and who knows buy the dlc or the game. But also the developers should come out and state the about of effort they done and that it would be sweet for them to purchase the game. Also developers should have a page where people can priate the game but have the option to pay what they want, and what will happen is that the developers will get a clear understanding of how much there game is worth in the eyes of the many priates and ultimately get money from them.

Online pass is another thing thats no good as well, that is the same as DRM as it doesn't benefit the buyers in having to enter a code and worst for the publisher too because online passes results in less sales because gamer gets a sweet game, a friend doesn't know and asks to brower it for a day, he takes it home and Bam lost sale because the game needs a dam pass, also the game is very unportable resulting in many lost sales from people bring games over to play. Sure you can login to that players account or buy the code but thats too much effort ontop of the sheer about of effort it takes to just play the game.

But whats a solution to the use game sales because no doubt use game sales are Far Far Worst than priacy. Because we are talking about a paying customer but a paying customer thats not paying the maker but the retailer. So the Retailers are the blamers not the consumers. Becuase when you are a consumer and see a product, ones New and ones used, but the use one has barely any cover damage and the product is exactly the same experience offered and is at a slightly cheaper price, you are going to buy the cheaper one, its pretty much common sense. So its not the consumer to blame in this case but Gamestop/EB/Game combination and other retailers.

To solve this is really easy for Publishers to do, and thats not banning it but instead create a Buffer/window where used games cannot be sold and only new games. A buffer of around 3-6 months, which is basically the period were majority of times 50-75%+ of sales are done. So to get this to happen simply band together an force the reatilers to submit or start moving more Digital Distribution and simpy stop supplying games to retailers who dont, sure your lose some sales but the amount lost in used games would be made up.

Once thats in place, good buy online passes. But we all know most publishers are now mega corporations, and since gaming is Big Billion dollar business, and many publsihers public they have investors who are majority not gamers who only care about the return in there investment. So what ever makes them the most money is all they care about. And since gamers are highly loyal dedicated consumer group that want games no matter what, publsihers are starting to abuse there power.

So vote with your wallet and dont buy it you dont like what they are doing.

But the future is bright for gamers because we have reach the point where lots of big universities globally are teaching games related courses, which will see a rise in the number of developers, in the past they originally came from other courses like art to computer science but are now focused entirely on games which with the rise of cheaper Digital Distribution platforms like steam, xbla/psn amd ios/android enabling self publsihed titles we will initably see new publishers arise with new development studios that could pave the way from the current turds the lie with the current publisher meccas and create better gaming experiences for all.

So when it comes to that, support those development studio games and grow there business and make sure while buying many of these games to choose the good developers who want to benefit the gamers and not only increase there bank accounts.

Of Course That's Just My Opinion, I Could Be Wrong

what you just described there is called collusion and is illegal.  furthermore, the used game stores have no reason to enter such an agreement as they make more profit on used game sales then they do on new game sales.

Meh, I'll keep on pirating.
