Forums - Gaming Discussion - Another XBLA Hit, and Jim Sterling rates it 5.5

What is wrong with this douchebag, how can meta critic take him seriously or this website?

Bastion - meta 8.8, his score, 6.5
From Dust - 9 from Eurogamer and Edge, probably get mid 8 meta, Jim socres it 5.5

If he rates the rest of the SoA games in a similar fashion surely it's pretty obvious something is going on?

Anyone who has played Bastion knows it isn't a 6.5 game ...

He did earn some degree of credibility with his spot on Deadly Premonition review, but yeah, fuck that guy. He's just a contrarian for the sake of being a contrarian most of the time.

His opinion I guess. Maybe he doesn't like video games?

Are you serious? There has to be something freaking wrong with you to review Bastion a 6.5. That is insane. I'm all for haveing opinions but a score that low implies game mechanics are broken (which they aren't, they are amazing) and other major problems. Which again there isn't If had given it a mid 7 then maybe I could understand that and say oh well the game just wasn't for him but a 6.5 is WAY too low and From Dust is already off to great reviews and he gives it a 5.5? Just doesn't make any sense.

I don't have an X360, but I won't pass a chance to send one into the side of Jim Sterling.

I really can't stand the man. I thought I had maxed out my dislike for him... until I found his Twitter account.

Always disliked him. He's the Armond White of the video game reviewers.

This guy is an asshole, excuse the french but it's true. He just gets the site hits. This isn't the first time he's done assholic things, just the latest thing. No one should take him seriously.

There's a legend that say he's so fat, because he eats the real score in his reviews.

I'm not supporting either Sterling or the game since I haven't played it, but 6.5 should not imply the game is broken, if you use the scale properly. To me it implies the game is above average, ie: playable and at times fun, but not all the time. It may also imply he thought it wasn't interesting/original enough to be memorable (which is subjective, naturally) or that he felt he wasn't getting good value for his money, or that the game simply wasn't his cup of tea.

If a game I was seriously looking forward to got a score of 6.5 I would still purchase it as long as nothing similar was also available with better value. I might wait for a price-drop, depending on how bad I want it and what the reviewer had to say. You have to keep in mind that the old "7 is the new 5" way of reviewing games was not helpful for anyone.

If you would have found a 7.5 acceptable, I don't really see that much of a difference in this case. Personal opinion is always a heavy influence on score. A score of 7.5 would IMO imply he thoroughly enjoyed the game, but didn't feel it was a masterpiece. It shouldn't be a score to be handed out lightly, as it used to be in the past.

edit: as far as my personal opinion of Jim Sterling goes, he's always striked me as a rather pig-headed human being anyway...

Until you've played it, every game is a system seller!

Though I hardly ever agree with his reviews. I love how you all flame on him for having an: OPINION.
