Forums - Microsoft Discussion - AMD: Xbox 720 graphics will look like Avatar

Technology company AMD, who supplied the graphics hardware for the Xbox 360, claims that the next Xbox will be capable of the level of graphical detail seen in James Cameron's movie Avatar.  Even on PC, that kind of technology just isn't here yet, but AMD claims the Xbox 720 will launch with it.

While AMD would not confirm they were actually working on the 360's successor, director of ISV relationships at AMD, Neal Robison, stated that gamers have a lot to excited about.

Robison also mentioned that the A.I. and physics capabilities of the next-gen hardware will allow for every pedestrian in a game such as Grand Theft Auto or Saints Row to have a totally individual mentality, meaning when you shoot a gun or run someone over they don't all just do the same thing.  There will be no more mob mentality, where everyone just screams and runs away; every NPC will actually be an individual character.

Whoa.

I severely doubt it?

Unless the price is going to be extraordinary (and I mean truly extraordinary) or the console is going to arrive more than ten years from now I simply cannot see them packing enough processing power to generate a game that looks like avatar in real time.

Considering the super computers used on Avatar occupy the 193rd and 197th spots on the list of the top 500 super computers in the world...

Everybody take a drink!

I don't really see how that would be even possible considering that we haven't even begun to see graphics anywhere near that level even running on the latest and greatest PC's. How freaking far out do they expect the launch of the Nextbox to be? I'm thinking 2013 or 2014 but really will hardware at that point be ready to handle something like Avatar?

I just don't think it will yet. We are seeing some big jumps graphically now with Battlefield 3 on PC simply looking incredible and Witcher 2 and obviously 2-3 years from now the bar is going to be pushed even further but now near Avatar levels.

that would be very cool indeed, if they can come close to that level of detail for the games. i know for sure i will be doing alot of just standing around for a few mins in some of the games on the next xbox system and looking around at everything in the environment.

How many hours did it take to render an individual frame of Avatar? I thought they had thousands of computers doing this stuff in tandem.

Heaps probably. The super-computers are actually thousands of linked cores, so essentially thousands of computers doing the stuff in tandem.

We probably will hit avatar like graphics in a couple of generations. I think a good indicator is how long it took from making Toy Story to getting Toy Story like graphics in games.

This reminds me of when Sony claimed the Emotion Engine would push graphics like Toy Story 2. That still hasn't happened, not really - Witcher 2 is the closest we've got to that and it's still not there.

I'll start holding my breath when and if the PS4/720 push visuals like TS2's in real time.

CAN'T WAIT TO PLAY THE NEW AVATAR GAME FOR THE SEVEN TWENTY.

I'm sure by look like avatar they mean "look like avatar." It won't be anyway near it in technical terms, but it will look close to it to the average person.
