Forums - Sales Discussion - Is This How MS Intends To Become #1?

@sales2099

The thing with the phones works differently atleast here in germany. Depending on contract size t-mobile or others shell out a provision upto ranging from 100-500 eur per contract. you basically pay this back by less favorable phone costs or higher monthly fees with 2 contracts you can get 800+ eur as provision. the seller usually gives 2 decent smartphones with it but he can also give 2 not so good phones and a ps 3 or notebook or in some cases a motorscooter.

Those promotions have nothing to do with sony those sellers usually buy large quantities of ps 3 wii tvs notebooks xbox 360 and give it away with phone contracts. Sony has usually nothing to do with it afaik.

a similar deal to win 7 pc + xbox 360 would be sony bravia tv +ps 3 .

lol first off its one month out of dozens of months that passed this gen. relax

its also mostly due to the 360 windows 7 promotion.

and it all works out due to if these are inflated due to being shipped then next month will be lower as its all about trying to actually sell those shipped

but how many since inception has ms been counting? How many have they "given away" outside of the windows 7 promo, and what else is counted?

Also, where do the 360 replacements come from? The distributors?

I'm very curious as to their numbers when it appears currently that ps3 sells many more games.

ps3 sells more games? when there isnt any fresh releases the 360 usually comes out on top software wise.....as it has done the entire gen mostly.

its also not like ms is the only one giving away consoles. Sony has a free ps3 given to any rogers customer that buys 2 phones. They all do it. Some promos are just more successful then the other.

Sorry, I mean attach rate. 360 sells more games, but ps3 sometimes beats it. At one point, I think it was 4 months of straight higher sales, but with significantly less hardware. The attach rate for ps3 is higher every year IIRC, and that doesn't make sense to me.

I could be completely wrong, since I've been out of the sales loop for a while, but I was pretty sure that ps3 was now beating 360 in overall attach rate, and beating it also for 2 straight years.

And I'm not saying MS is wrong for doing it. They all do it, believe me, I know. But MS is the better marketer. Your alluded offer is good at rogers, a retailer which I've never heard of. MS' offer is with any windows 7 700$ pc no matter what retailer in all of usa. I'm pretty sure that MS is "selling" a whole lot more than nintendo or sony. That's what I'm trying to get at. What's the discrepancy?

You have  to remember that ALOT more 360 failed then ps3s, and even with the (half ass) extended warrenty alot of poeple weren't covered or just got sick of sending it in and bought a new one from a retailer while keeping their collection

pretty much...

The way pachter and then source have reported this is a little lazy and probably wide of the mark.

NPD couldnt afford to be seen to bowing to unreasonable outside influences - its business would be screwed overnight.

Iits a non-story that people seem to want to run with to somehow explain why their console of choice got its arse kicked in NPD.

If Pachter is correct and MS has convinced NPD to include some shipment data to distributors, with some of those units making their way out of the US so they will never actually be sold in the US, then I think its a reletively big story.  It would mean MS are trying to inflate their numbers.  And there is no question that MS would have outsold the PS3 and Wii in the US, it's pretty much a given.  But if MS is doing this to make their own YOY seem better to investors, that's quite dishonest.

I repeat....  shipped number released soon to ratify any sell through numbers....   so why does this wild conspiracy theory matter in the end?

I want to know if this is Pachter or Source, so I am going to find out.

How will this change the WW shipment numbers?  Does MS give out specific numbers for each country?  If this is true, it won't effect WW shipment numbers, it would only shift shipment numbers from South America to sales in the US.  And since no one truly tracks South America like NPD tracks the US, you won't see either a dip in numbers in South America or sold through numbers being counted twice.  And I await the Source's clarification.

My point is only the total worldwide figure matters, I couldnt really give a crap about regional variances.

and.. LOL... I wont be asking the source to clarify.  Horses mouth on this one.

Something tells me you would react differently if Sony or Nintendo had gotten NPD to shift shipped numbers to sold numbers in the US just so the PS3 or the Wii would be ahead of MS in the NPD report.

Of course, like I mention in the title, this may also be how MS plans to achieve its stated goal of being #1 this year.

If I understand this correctly (and if I don't someone correct me), they can't do that since they're basically selling the consoles to themselves. The consoles they sold to retailers in Brazil are consoles they will not need to ship again to Brazil, so the number stays the same. They inflate US numbers in exchange for deflating LA numbers (but those are not kown usually). Shipped consoles should tell us the truth in the end.

just ignore them, they're freaking crazy right now you know

Promotions are promotions, my friend received his PS3 because of a TV purchase so this is nothing new and is only really a footnote and like all promotions will end.

The last point though is curious although again merely a footnote. What I am curious about is not the final destination as that can happen regardless but more about counting distribution in the numbers.

I am thinking that this is more likely an American reseller with a presence in Brazil who simple shipped some in that direction which I would imagine happens frequently on this occasion though the numbers must of been in a higher than usual volume.
