Forums - Sales Discussion - PlayStation3's Future?

The PS3 is in the exact same situation as the PS2 and PSone were before. So I don't really understand why everyone is so negative about the sales of a 600$ console. Only the early adaptors will buy it and after the pricedrop lots of people will follow. It worked 7 years and 12 years ago and will work just the same way with the PS3 once the pricedrop in October comes.

That is not what happened to the PS1 and PS2. They sold well from the beginning; the PS1 sold very well for a first system, and the PS2 set sales records. And the PS1 and PS2 sold at half the price of the PS3. If you think that's the exact same situation, you are delusional as the Nintendo fanboys denying the lackluster sales of the GC.

Most people on here want to see Sony fail, that's why they're so happy about the low sales compared to the Wii and keep bitching about it. But you can't compare a 600$ console to a 250$ one. The PS3 will have a way longer lifespan than the Wii and will definately outsell it in time.

You can compare a $250 one to a $300 one, which is how the PS1 and PS2 cost. Sorry, but consumers are not overlooking that, especially since the PS2 offered the DVD player at that price.

Nothing in live is for certain, so the PS3 could ofcourse fail miserably. But nothing points to that direction right now. The first real indication we'll have will be during Christmas. If the PS3 outsells its competitors during that period, the PS3 will probably be the new market leader. If not then the PS3 probably won't.

That is one thing I agree on, as past console wars have been decided largely around that time. If the PS3's games sell, consumers will buy the system, even if the price will slow adoption as fast at the past Playstations.

By this time in its lifetime, the PS2 had already sold more units in Japan than the Wii has. Every Japanese developer jumped behind it, it become a huge success in Japan - and this drove the overseas sales, with awesome Japanese games. By the time the GC/Xbox came out, it was already over.

Totally true...in the same timeframe, the PS2 had sold 2.75m units in Japan in 5 months whereas the PS3 has only sold 0.86m, but, the PS1 had ony sold 0.69m units in the same time.  It took the PS1 18 months to sell the same amount as the PS2.

Prediction (June 12th 2017)

Permanent pricedrop for both PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro in October.

PS4 Slim $249 (October 2017)

PS4 Pro $349 (October 2017)

You can't adequately compare the Playstation to the PS3 largely because the Playstation was a brand-new brand from a company who was just entering the industry ...

When you compare the PS2 to the PS3 you will see that the PS2 took off like a rocket (having sold 2.5 Million consoles in a similar timeframe in Japan, selling 1.6 Million consoles in a similar time frame in North America under serious supply problems. You have to remember that by the time the XBox and Gamecube launched the PS2 had sold 20 Million units worldwide.

Tao has hit it on the head.

I don't know about you but it doesn't seem like Sony execs are panicking. Interesting reports about Sony not even trying to secure exclusives seem somewhat planned. Apparently they have an amazing amount of first party exclusives and are trying some really impressive things for inhouse software development for the PS3. It seems as if they have something cooking the way they are behaving and they are not backing down. They seem to have sunk more money into the PS3, tool development, games and software then they have in the previous generations. The PS3's future it could end up dead last in this race but I am pretty sure I am going to have some damn good exclusive experiences with it if this First party train keeps rolling.

and eques, developers haven't left the PS3 they have just started making multipllatform game that is not the same implication and lost planet cost 20 milion to make and another 20 million to advertise.

EDIT: is it price over appeal? Wasn't the dreamcast cheaper than the PS2? How about the Gamecube on launch? That was also cheaper than the PS2. The xbox being the most expensive console on the market for quite some time ended up outselling the cheapest console. Price doesn't really dictate people's purchasing habits, it is appeal. And considering that the PS3 doesn't have "that" many GREAT titles out, it is selling quite well for it's price. And the thing about consoles is that you would never want them to sell "because" of their price you want them to sell because of their "appeal".

the japanese market and european market have switched places for Sony. That's the major difference in this generation imo.

Japanese people are really trend minded. The DS is amazingly popular and the whole japanese market has turned from real-games to non-games because of it. Games like Virtua Figher, Zelda, Blue dragon and other great games, who used to be big big systemsellers, are now being overthrown from the charts by hundreds and hundreds of non-games. That's why the japanese Market isnt an indication of which console will succeed anymore. The european market has grown bigger than the japanese one and is imo a much better market to indicate which console will be the next market leader then the japanese one.

Sounds like the gamecube.  Seriously if people that buy the PS3 are happy with that more power to them.

currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

the worst part about this is there are only 2 reasons people say the PS3 is a failure.

#1 The wii has takent the world by storm

#2 The PS2 took the world by storm

This is getting terribly old and becoming a terrible diluted argument with nothing substantial being said.  You dont fail until you get the test back, Sony has built the PS3 with more of a future impact than we have ever seen, no one should even bother claiming failure until we see what happens with Home and Blu-Ray the two things that sony has built their strategy on.

This is like saying Lebron James is a failure or Dwyane Wade is a failure because they didnt do what Michael Jordan did.  people, the Wii and the PS2 may go down as the most remarkably selling systems ever, to hold the PS3 or 360 to those standards and shout failure is absurd.

Sony is going in a new direction and we wont even begin to have an understanding of whether or not its going to be prosperous for another 6 month, theyre banking on two unproven things: BD and Home.  Why dont we wait until we see what happens with those things before we start throwing out victory crowns after 5 months.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Nintendo exec's act the same way with the GC. In fact, didn't Nintendo fanboys put forth the same arguments about first party games?

Price, when the difference is $100, is somewhat important, but not an overiding factor in people purchases - $200 and $300 differences are. I think people seem to forget that every console last gen was $300 or less at launch, and the PS3 is twice that cost. Can you honestly tell me that cost isn't a factor when the difference is so great?

Now here's some fun with graphs stolen from Neogaf

EDIT: All this data is for the Japanese market

Not true. "Hardcore" games are still selling as well as they ever did - the non games just sell better. It´s the same situation we had with PSX, the PSX pushed realistic games at it´s time and suddenly these games were very popular. Exactly the same thing is happening with the DS now. Nothing different.

@Steverhcp02 (omg ^^) : Yes Wii has taken the world by storm and yes the PS3 sells bad. But there are also other arguments:

-3rd parties heading over to Wii (please, believe it - it is true doesn´t matter if you wanna realize it or not...)

- lower price

- Nintendo is the strongest 1st party developer in the world

- Microsoft is a big competitor today with lots of exclusive games, the better price and one year on the market.

- Sony is arrogant and they don´t care about exclusives (and btw staticneuron: If this is a plan it´s a bad one...)

- Nintendo is stronger than one generation ago.

- everytime in videogame history the company that focused on growth won. Nintendo is focusing on growth. Sony is looking for the same market as they did since PSX but now this market is nearly split up 1:1 with the 360 (wait 4 weeks and the PS3 Japan numbers are about 10k a week maybe and than the 360 sells equal or bette on a worldwide basis)

- just 25% of all gamers are hardcore gamers and that is what Sony and Microsoft are fighting about. And now guess how owns the hardcore crowd today? Hint: It´s not Sony.

Well I wouldn't say that Europe is that much better, it is Singstar here and singstar there. Then we have DS were Nintendodogs has sold more than 5 million units!

More I don't belive Sony will launch any pricedrops before they have started with bundles. PS3 is not more dead than GC, which I am a proud supporter of.

Buy it and pray to the gods of Sigs: Naznatips!
