Forums - Sales Discussion - PlayStation3's Future?

Imo Sony should

1. Offer free online content. Free downloads of PS1 games, like in a similar way that nintendo is doing for the wii. The thing of it is that these online games aren't going to be bringing in much $$$ at all. Gamers don't want to pay for old games, even $5. Why not just offer them free to increase the value of the PS3?

2. Make it mandatory that every PS3 game have online content, unless it would mess the game up ( FF13). Do whaever it is necessary to be the standard for online content.

3. Sponsor a discount for blu-ray players, so that it will win Europe.

4. Drop the price of the PS3 by $100.

Basically, point 1 is expensive, testing and hosting are not free.  Also, if there are old games, why get new games?  Also, they will look like crap on PS3, defeating the purpose of the HD power given to PS3

Point 2 will drive 3rd party away and increase cost of first party.  Also, establishing look and feel consistancy for on-line is expensive

Point 3, PS3 is already the cheapest blue ray player on the market

Point 4, lose even more $$$ and piss off the early adopters (read as loyal customers)?

5. ???

6. profit!

future? LOL. =)) only sony may know a little about ps3 future. They send to UK 220k console, which were sold in 3 weeks + some left, as they predicted. :) Who of you know, how many peopel will buy Killzone2? and how many of them ps3 because only of that game, which is 100% exclusive, not like geow, which will be on pc. Maybe 5 mln. will be sold? =)) Or even 15? who knows? maybe you? just sit and wait, future will come to us. =)

How is the PS3 selling in the UK this week?

Most forms of analysis is dependent on the principle that looking at how things have worked out historically tells us how things will work out in the future; this is the reason why precidence is such an important concept. The fact is that when you compare the PS3 to historic systems you see a lot of systems that performed poorly which are similar and no systems which performed well that are similar.

1) Sony has more 1st party developers, then Nintendo+M$ do. 2) Sony has 100 mln fan base. 3) Sony has impressive 3rd party exclusives, which N and M$ don`t have. well, if you look here http://www.eproductwars.com/vg-uk/ ps3 is selling better then x360, that`s all what matters. not to mention, that in 3 weeks ps3 made 800k, while x360 made this number only after half a year. =))

PS2 sell through was in the 70% range. I would suggest Sony was expecting something similar this time.

Nintendo is stronger than last gen because of a numer of things, the key ones are: They have a hardware that sells in all region, and it sells fast. They are different, a Nintendo with an orginal GamePad with ubergraphics would have totally failed. Why chose the consol manufactorer that totally failed delivery any good amount of games last time? They have new franshises that sells really well combined with old ones (Wii Sport and Zelda)
The question isn't whether Nintendo can sell in all regions. The question is how much. Had Nintendo launched Wii with the same power as the competitors but a normal controller, I don't imagine the results would be all that different. Even if they lost a bit of steam, they'd still be well ahead of Sony. Nintendo does generally launch new franchises, which we saw early in the Cube's life with games like Animal Crossing and Pikmin. I do wonder to what extent this impacts whether they can release old franchises as well, but they generally do tinker around and invent something new to go along with the 50 Mario games.

It would absolutely be different.  If they delivered a machine of that power, then they would have to charge that much, unless they want to take a loss like MS and Sony are.  Even then, the best they can do is match Xbox's price.

This would be a repeat of the Gamecube failure, but even worse.  Why? Because there would be just people who like playing Zelda and Warioware (Ninty loyalists) buying the console.  There would be NO media buzz.  Wii would sell < 3 million (considering Zelda and Warioware are not doing that great in Japan, I would even consider < 2 million) worldwide

Why would 3rd parties want to jump on?  I would only see mass exodus to MS because they would have the largest install base with Wii having no chanceof catch up.  Wii would have been totally ignored if not for the wiimote

Nintendo could release a machine the same power as the 360 for $250 and do so without taking a loss (they wouldn't be making a profit either, though). Much of Nintendo's buzz is based on it outdoing Sony. That would not change. Current console owners are those who just like playing Nintendo games.

That's so wildly inaccurate it's not even funny, and it's not the first time you've posted crap like that either.

Killzone 2, wtf. Since when is this a system seller. Let's see released in Nov 2004  (NA) at 129,500 and was outsold by 19 other ps2 games, 8 of which were also new releases. Including the freakin' Incredibles. By March 2005 it wasn't even in the top 200 game list. Incredibles was at #43. I hate the arguement that Killzone 2 is going to be some great game. Why should it be, Killzone one sucked. It is nowhere near halo or gears of war levels.

PS3's future is done. No system has started with at 1/2 the sales of its competitor 6 mos in and came back to take the lead. Wii will catch 360 this year and will then start the historically proven cycle of large userbase => more dev support => more games => increasing user base => repeat. It has been the same in every generation and there is no reason to see it change. The supreme power of the ps3 or 360 will not make a factor just as it did not help the Genesis beat the NES or SNES or the N64 beat the ps1 or xbox/gc beat the ps2. Hell it didn't help any competitor beat any Nintendo handheld game system which was always technically inferior to its competitors. The only reason any system ever wins is it has the largest userbase fairly quickly and is relatively nice to devs.

By the end of 1996, the year N64 launched, it was still 800k less in hardware sales. I would say this is pretty damn good and completely makes up for the 2 year head start of the ps1. By 1997 it was 2m behind in hardware and 16m ahead in software. The power of Nintendo's name and obvious software sales still did not help. It was doomed to be second in the long run. These are only the numbers for NA where N64 had a better userbase. In Japan N64 was never even close.

To me, this scenario is exactly happening here with the Wii and PS3. It will be the same results, Wii will continue to be 2x the sales of PS3 World Wide for 2007 and gain a huge lead over PS3. With the complete failure of 360 in Japan, PS3 will ultimately catch the 360 as well. Thus, this gen will be Wii, PS3, 360.

Sometimes I really wonder if you have even noticed news etc for this generation. Before the Wiimote was shown, and the long lines at E3 and similar places in combination of good news came out, Nintendo was counted as going 3rd party. So the buzz about Nintendo isn't about that they beat Sony (even if it is a part of it) the buzz is that they do something different. As Auroragb pointed out; Nintendo wouldn't sell as much as the do now if they weren't different. That means that the buzz Nintendo have because of outselling Sony wouldn't be there either, simply because they wouldn't be selling more than Sony.

Even more, Nintendo couldn't have made a consol in 250 USD range with the same power as the 360, heck even Microsoft is still taking a loss on the core system.

Shane, I must say that you must be the most uninformed writer on this board, I have never seen anybody stating that Nintendo isn't selling because of the Wiimote. Even those that is stating that it is a fad (yes I am looking at you Hus) agree upon that Nintendos sales depends on the Wiimote.
