No Sony didn't fail the PS3; they just took their time loving it tender.

To simply answer the question I would say yes.
Sony's strategy with the PS3 was simply wrong IMO.
There are several key factors:
Time to market: I don't think Sony were late, it's just than Microsoft pulled out the stops (cut corners) to get a one year advantage.
Price: As with many others here I agree that the initial price point was too high - this in turn would lead people looking to upgrade to buy a 360 instead. Whilst I do think BluRay was the right choice, the card readers and 4 x USB were overkill.
Cell CPU: A very impressive CPU for raw performance but I don't believe that makes it a good CPU for a games console. Not only did this impact the price of the PS3 but also the many complaints on the difficulty of cross-compiling games and hence 3rd party support.
RAM: 256MB + 256MB appears to have been a bad decision. Either a single 512MB addressable by both GPU and CPU or since they were happy to over spec 512MB + 512MB would have been nice.
Backwards Compatibility: If cost effective then either have it from the start and make sure ALL territories get it! Or don't have it at all.

i didn't thats why i said sony needed to launch it at $399
that was within consumer reach and would have done the deal. |
Even at that price, I think the wii would still have won.

Please provide a link to this if possible, because I distinctly remember Sony profiting off of the slim. I think you may be confused. |
What he wrote is partially true and partially wrong: according to cost estimates, like iSuppli ones, in October 2009 PS3 was still losing a few tens $ in USA, but, due to pricing, already breaking even or even profiting a few $ in EU. During Spring 2010 it should have broken even in USA, if components cost followed the usual reduction with time.
no I dont think its a faliure at all I love my ps3 the exlusive games are much better than any off xbox games.

wii would have had the innovation market but if you think that brand name doesn't matter when PLAYSTATION was the biggest thing in gaming by far back then Wii would have picked yp by nowhere near the way it did
its like Android,Nokia keep taking out better things but APPLE still beats them |
I just wanted to point this out...

Droid is doing very well for itself. As I am pro-Google/anti-Apple, this is good news to me. However, that is only US data. Still, Droid is a worldwide phenomenon, so I hope it will hold true there.
OT, again... NO Sony did not fail the PS3.

android doesn't comprise of one brand but plenty and all of the biggest in phone industry except nokia,it is destined to do more
even then since FEB this year Android's increase in US was halted after Verizon iPhone launch
