ps3 will go down in history as the most successful 3rd place console.

Highly doubtful. For that to happen it would need to finish in third.

LOL!!!!! awsome post! XD

Sony wanted to test that high price point. I think they would do it again, except with a lower price point of $499 for the Ps4.

In the beginning yes.

Let's get one thing established right away... Consumers failed Sony!

I know right? I can't believe consumers didn't want to pay $600 for a video game system.

It was an epic failure at first, but since then they have learned and improved greatly.
It was all Sony's fault though; after two huge successes they had become arrogant and had been struck by hybris. They thought the brand alone would seal the deal but that was not the case. With an ugly price tag and a game library that wasn't exactly crushing the competition it simply was far from a given that the consumer would choose Playstation this time.

if it would have launched at $399 the gaming world would have been completely different today

Wii would have never taken off

yes it would be a different world. there would be no ps3 or Sony. they would be out of business after lossing 100's of billions of dollars

100's of billions of dollars, are you real?

sony would have lost alot but software number would have been off the hook

don't forget,PS2 sold 1.6billion copies of software

if sony got anywhere near that then they would have totally earned everything back

every PS3 game today pays $10 to sony in royalty

sony earns $35 on first party games

plus the success would have turned blu-ray into a monster and royalties would have made sony very happy

the reason why this couldn't possible was

sony's overconfidence on its brand name.it was $399 strong,just not $499 strong

few launch games

plus early shortages which didn't build a base and then devs backed off

i meant to type tens of billions. (though it may have been close to 100 billion with a lot of rounding). at $400 they would have lost nearly $500 per console sold, and at that price they would be flying off the shelves, and be selling better than the wii was.  thus cripling them financially. say they sold 30 million at that price (they wouldnt have been able to drop it for many many years, like 2009-2010. that would be 15 billion, likely they would have sold double that.

OK, in my opinion the OP is all over the map and I don't feel like a mega-post right now, so I'll address the actual poll question and thread title: "Did Sony fail the PS3?"

First we need to define "the PS3". IMO, it's not some mythical hypothetical PS3 that might have been made, it's the actual PS3 that did get produced by Sony.

Did Sony fail that system? Once they'd finalized the specs, did they fail to do all they should have to help it succeed?

In my opinion -- NO. They dragged their feet on Home, GT5, and other things, but Sony certainly stepped up to the plate in support of the PS3. You can make an extremely good argument that Sony made a mistake to make a system like the PS3 that they lost so much money on initially, but they could not have realistically sold at more of a loss than they did.

The PSN is seen as a lesser alternative to XBL, but Microsoft did have a year's head start and more experience with OSes and that sort of thing. And I have always liked the XMB better than the 360's menu. I will admit that it's changed a lot since I used my 360 often, so now my preference might be more due to familiarity; but I don't think so.

Anyway I don't want to talk about every little thing: overall, considering what the PS3 was/is (and disregarding what it hypothetically could have been if it was a totally different system), Sony didn't fail it.

So ... spambot?

No ... a real person??

I mean, it refers to the ad in the site, which makes me think a real person is typing.  But that does not read like it was composed by a person who speaks English fluently.

And on the other hand, the links are for a .uk site, and it ALSO doesn't read like it's written by a programmer who speaks English fluently.

Scary.

I am a happy ps3 owner, and im going with yes.

Sony is and has always been what is holding the ps3 back. It took to long took a longtime to bring out great games, trophies, psn, and get to a decent price.

Many of the above issues have.made Sony a better company and of will show.next gen. I still think not doing true ps2 "classics" has lost sony a great deal of business.
