Hardware unit sales for the PS3 and PSP this Christmas were phenomenal (bar Nintendo's success). Several smash-hit PS3-exclusive games have boosted PS3 software sales too. Sony's objective of having an multimedia centre in every living room has paid off, and sales will only rise in the future because of the PlayStation brandname.
Looking forward to 2008, big titles like Killzone 2, Metal Gear Solid 4 and LittleBigPlanet along with price cuts will increase demand. Once anufacturing cost issues are resolved, there will be nothing to stop PS3 sales. Since Blu-ray Discs have taken off, Sony will also generate significant revenue from BD sales and become profitable soon. At the rate the PS3 is selling, it will overtake Xbox 360 Others sales in 2008. It seems backwards compatibility isn't that important to make successful consoles.
