1) Do you like the horizontal main menu?

Fine by me!

2) Would you prefer the sub-menus to be activated on hover?

That would be nice

3) Do you like the new rich text editor? If no, then is it the idea of a rich text editor in general or this particular implementation?

Asside form the complicated quote system, it works fine (how about a system where when you quote someone, it only quotes their post, and not the posts that person quoted as well)

4) Do you like the idea of a news system where only the most popular stories are shown on the front page?

Not at all. A news story can't become popular if it doesn't even show up. Not many people want to hunt down this sites news.

5) Do you like popularity to be measured by "votes" or simply by page impressions?

Votes

6) Do you like the rich text for news stories (embed videos, flash files, edit layout and colours) or just simple text news stories?

rich text sounds like a good option.

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

There seem to be mixed opinions regarding some of the new parts of the site. In an attempt to quickly and efficiently figure out what to keep and what to change, here are some simple yes / no points I'd like people to answer

1) Do you like the horizontal main menu? Dont use it - at all.

2) Would you prefer the sub-menus to be activated on hover? Prefer on hover (I think).

3) Do you like the new rich text editor? If no, then is it the idea of a rich text editor in general or this particular implementation? Don't mind it - sort of prefer it now, but won't die if the old version comes back :)

4) Do you like the idea of a news system where only the most popular stories are shown on the front page? No - news should be like a newspaper, and show the most recent stories ( plus maybe most popular)

5) Do you like popularity to be measured by "votes" or simply by page impressions? Impressions is fine

6) Do you like the rich text for news stories (embed videos, flash files, edit layout and colours) or just simple text news stories? Assuming that all (?) news stories are links to other sites, I think a link/plain text is good enough.

Simple answers to each so we can effectively "vote" and I can make some changes. Any other comments / suggestions also welcome in here

Needs to be a strong differentiator between "news" stories & "threads" (and what goes on each). Don't want to be creating duplicates for interesting topics.

Gesta Non Verba

Nocturnal is helping companies get cheaper game ratings in Australia:

Game Assessment website

Wii code: 2263 4706 2910 1099

1) yes

2) yes, would be much better

3) no problem with it.

4) no opinion

5) don't think either work

6) rich texts.

i would like also to add that the prediction league square on the front page is getting too messy. if you want to diversifie the predictions, you should may be organize it by categories. (and also getting our personal score on our profile since it's only the top 20 that know where they stand)

1. Yes, only if 2 is yes.
2. Yes.
3. Yes.
4. Yes. (if it is possible to get new news to the front page)
5. I like votes. However once agian, it should be possible to get the news articles to the front page. (otherwise their not really ever seen)
6. YES.

For those of you who want to remove a quote from within a quite. Use the 6th button on the bottom row from the left. (it is 3 horizontal bars, the one in the middle is blue, longer than the one above and below it, and it has a arrow pointing right)

Select the 'quote' box you wanna remove. Then click that button. POOF. There ya go. Wont be bothered by that pesky quite anymore. (this works for quotes in quotes in quotes in quotes... take out the first quote you dont want, everything else is now gone)

One way to solve the news problem would be to put in a system that forces news that is 2 days old to 'reset' to a 'new news article' status, and thus allowing 'new' news to come forward. (and if that news item is just that damn popular it will come back forward)

No. There should either be only a "latest news" section on the front page or both a "latest news" section and "most popular news" section on the front page.

The concept of having a "most popular news" section on the front page is kind of flawed. You just end up having the same news stories up there day-in and day-out.

Well exactly, unless people check the "breaking news" section which they are not - so you agree a system of displaying these by rotation on the front page would work?

The way Digg deals with news which I like works in two ways - the "popular" news is ordered by date, newest first. So newly popular stories join the top while older stories drop off the bottom - this ensures, in theory that new news is always at the top. In order to become popular you need to fulfil certain criteria - a number of votes - at which point you join the popular list. Until then you are just on a general list of submitted news. I think this is necessary to sort the good news from bad - or a similar system. We could have moderated news where a mod has to ok it and it becomes popular that way or is just deleted, but I think that is too heavy handed an approach....

I don't really have an opinion on how the algorithm for popular news should work. As I said, I just want to see the latest news on the main page in some form.  I just don't like digging down to the breaking news section of the website to view the latest news.

As for the issue of sorting through good news and bad news, I agree that this is difficult without implementing some sort of news moderation. The only thing that really bugged me with regard to bad news in the past was people posting information as news and not providing a link to the source of the information. I think it should be required to provide a link to the source of the information in a news item.

1.  It's fine.

2.  Sure.

3.  I rarely use the 'rich text' part of the editor, but don't mind it.   It doesn't seem to have slowed that many people down.  (Kwaad taught me how to spell check in it since FF doesn't automatically do it for some reason.)

4.  Hate the new 'popularity' news system.

5.  Impressions may work better since it's hard to get people to vote.

6.  I found the system to post a news story to be a bit confusing.  The first time I used it, I didn't know that it was a two step process of creating a title and short description followed by a second form to enter the actual story and create the link to the source.  Can you put everything in one form or provide some instructions for users who haven't posted a news story before?

Numbers are like people. Torture them enough and you can get them to say anything you want.

VGChartz Resident Thread Killer

The simpler option is better, me thinks. It encourages people to post register and participate(because it doesnt look intimidating) and it makes for easier reading.  Follow Nintendo's lead.

@ioi

I haven't tried the tables because nothing else works anyway, so I would probably be more positive about them if the editor gave me more confidence. Safari should be able to do any kind of Ajax (is this editor Ajax?). I know other dynamic sites work, e.g. the vote button from Digg works fine, and after all Safari passed the Acid 2 test for HTML+CSS rendering at http://www.webstandards.org/action/acid2 . It's just that the authors of this open source editor you implemented did not test for Safari. I realize you can't bend backwards for those maybe 5% of your users who use Safari, so as I said just give me the option to turn off the rich text editor.

Hardcore gaming is a bubble economy blown up by Microsoft's $7 $6 billion losses.

What happened to the compare consoles or compare games for America? It's still under Japan.

Other than that the UI is a lot cleaner and looks nice.
