EA: No Modding Tools With Battlefield 3

By Mike Sharkey | Jul 5, 2011
Publisher confirms DICE still isn't planning to release a software development kit.

Electronic Arts and DICE have confirmed that Battlefield 3 is being designed for the PC first, consoles second, making today's news surprising for most PC gamers: Battlefield 3 will not include mod tools.

Speaking with GamerStar, EA Senior VP Patrick Soderlund broke the news. "As of now, we are not going to make any modding tools, no," Soderlund told GamerStar. "If you look at the Frostbite engine, and how complex it is, it's going to be very difficult for people to mod the game, because of the nature of the set up of levels, of the destruction and all those things… it's quite tricky. So we think it's going to be too big of a challenge for people to make a mod."

See the full interview below:

Previously, Battlefield 3 executive producer Patrick Bach told Game Informer that DICE is exploring other ways to appease the modding community.

"We will not deliver mod tools in the way that we delivered them for Battlefield 2," Bach said. "Creating mod tools today - dumbing them down - takes a lot of energy and what we are discussing more every day is, 'Where do we put our focus?'"

"Right now our focus is to create the best possible multiplayer, single-player, and co-op game -- the core game of Battlefield 3," he added. "We're still discussing how we handle modifications of any kind."

Bach made his comments in February, so in four months time, DICE evidently still hasn't decided how to handle the modding issue.

"Too complex for modders?" What the hell does he think PC modders are?

If this is their way of getting me to buy DLC they are sadly mistaken.

Yea the "too complex" sounds like a major cop-out. The original reason stated sounds more believable, but any multi player pc game should have at least some kind of map editor or something.

even if it was too complex people can teach them selves with lots of time, effort and trail and error. Many systems are dubbed "Complex" but after time and people getting there hands on it and using it, it doesn't become that complex to many. Also Modders are mainly students studying computer science, computer programming or a games course and people who have some experience in computers development or a really patient and eager to learn person.

I dont get why they dont come out and say "The reason we are not doing mod tools is because we want to sell DLC which people may not buy when mods are avaiable".

Which is a valid but flawed point because people will buy the DLC over mods for several reason:

1. They are on the public servers
2. There are always enough people any time to play them
3. They are of very high quality compared to the average mod.

People will buy the DLC even if there was modding tools avaiable and you can always state that you cannot copy DLC maps or get banned.

Of Course That's Just My Opinion, I Could Be Wrong

Out of all the ways Dice could fuck up...

Going to make PC guys buy their overpriced bullshit DLC just like every other developer.

As much as I love DICE, they're full of shit with this statement.

"Too complex for modders" Um hello Battlefield 2 anyone? I really hope they're working on mod tools after release...

Too complex? Yeah right. Many modders would surely put the required into modding the game despite it being very complex if they had the chance. Thanks, DICE!

I blame the consoles. They taught developers people will pay for things that traditionally were free

Yes, but luckily there still are other devs and publishers ready to attract pissed off PC gamers offering them what those turds removed.
