Forums - Gaming Discussion - This is just ludicrous - continuous "console gaming is dying" articles

These so called experts keep claiming console gaming is dying and blah blah blah. Angry birds is taking over blah blah.
They all need to be fired or not talk about something they are oblivious about.

I suppose instead of people playing their call of duty, uncharted, gears of war, zelda, and mario on their consoles, they will be playing them on their iPads and mobile devices. I'm guessing that is what these "experts" believe. It's like their deadline is coming up and the guy is like "shit guys, I guess I will just do another article about video games. People still play on those playstations right?"

Most people who play on consoles wouldn't dream of giving them up. It's simply the best way to play games.

Phones, being phones, have inherent limitations as gaming devices.

IPads/tablets are gimmicks for people who don't really use computers but want to look cool while they post on facebook.

There is no credible threat to console gaming today.

See the focus for them is total sales and that is a very narrow view to look at things. However I think console gamers (including myself) are ignoring just the effect of Angry Birds. It is a revolutionary game, like it or not. Hell it brings nothing new to the table, but it pushes video games into a bigger medium. The more people that play it, the more likely they are going to play other casual games, and maybe one day they might pick up something that is core-casual game.

The only problem I see with consoles games is that nowadays it's been hard to differentiate PC's from consoles since most of the games are multiform. But don't think it's major issue because every console had good sales this gen.

Apple and those that develop for their devices want to see console gaming die. So they are wishfully thinking and like to brag all the time. Phil Harrison's recent statement that within ten years Apple will own the games industry is hilarious. These iOS developers have their heads in the cloud.

Apple would need to drastically change its way of doing things to over take Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft. Not only would they need first party content they would need to drastically cut prices and go mainstream with a console. Even then Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft would put up one hell of a fight to maintain their marketshares.

Do I think the I-Pad and I-Phone could hurt handheld sales? Yes I do but they certainly are not going to run Nintendo or Sony out of town. Then they are not a threat to home consoles, if Apple wants to take over gaming within 10 years they would need to invest in a powerful game device and some big budget first party titles. This isn't going to happen within ten years.

The developers of Angry Birds are hilarious they talk about the end of console gaming. But they desperatly want to release Angry Birds on WiiWare and other console networks. If consoles are so dead why do they want their game to be on a console so badly?

Well who knows a lot can change in ten years, it is not unbeleaveble that we probably can buy tv's with services as Onlive included (in ten years) and that we can download games from a store or even stream it all we then basically need is probably an Apple Controller and account and then you can play everywhere....Going to your grandparents don't need to take a console with you because they probably will have an tv like that aswell..Just log in and play your games..

Console gaming can be a lot smaller in ten years from now.

It sure is killing handle gaming.
See how 3DS sales are below expectation while the PSVita struggle to sell at all?

I wouldn't mind paying $10 for a full game, though.

Here is one possibility.

Sony and MS both have relied on games to counter losses on hardware, correct? What games sell the most? Multi-platform games. Do most COD players care about PS3, or 360? Don't they pretty much just play on the consoles they own.

Say Google's Andriod OS is made for home devices. Many well respected companies put out machines that run the min spec or above for this OS. These machines are cheaper than PS4, and XB3, while capable of running games similar enough that the average guy can not really tell the difference. Now Acti, EA, Ubi, and the rest of the third party guys jump on and support these devices.

Now of course this is basically the same thing as a PC, but it loses that stigma. It is a devices for movies, TV, games, family photos, etc. but it is for your TV, not the PC room.

This could really hurt the sales of these massive franchises like Assassins Creed, Madden, COD, and others for Sony and MS. With that in mind and taking into account my first point, would this not lead to financial issues for both companies. Maybe third parties even start demanding better share of profits like they would get from this andriod platform. Or they just stop supporting MS and Sony just like they have Nintendo the last two generations.

I think it is very possible for the current platform environment to die. That does not mean the console will not live on, it will just evolve it to something that can sustain a larger audience.

Stop hate, let others live the life they were given. Everyone has their problems, and no one should have to feel ashamed for the way they were born. Be proud of who you are, encourage others to be proud of themselves. Learn, research, absorb everything around you. Nothing is meaningless, a purpose is placed on everything no matter how you perceive it. Discover how to love, and share that love with everything that you encounter. Help make existence a beautiful thing.

Well: if the claim is that console gaming will be replaced by phone games, then I think they are seriously overestimating the phone market/underestimating the console market.

Is Youtube a threat to traditional movies or series? Why not? I mean, I can get great, ten-minute snippets of entertainement, all for free.

Mobile phone gaming has been here since the late nineties - it may have grown up, but it's not taking over.

However, if the claim is that streaming devices will take over: Well, that is certainly possible, but it depends largely on the ability to buid an infrastructure that can handle it. Both in terms of network, and server capability.

come on angry birds.... is to 21st century video game what solitaire or mine sweeper was for last century games... might have been a revolution everybody plays it..... but this is not a game that will change the industry....look at zynga on facebook even if they do really well they are not taking over the sims....

like people said the only threat is smartphones being powerfull enough to compete with handheld.... then again we are far from that point... in terms of gaming processing power.... and even if they do... when was the last time you saw a Mac OS have any real support from game developpers....
and beside that I think MS is more likely to try to do a move like that than apple being able to do it.... it's always funny how people think apple is all powerfulll.... when they actually are about as relevent to the market than MLS is relevent to international soccer..... (meaning we ear a lot about them but they own nothing).... why because numbers are nice and big because it's one company.... but google OS and Sybian are way ahead of them.... and I wouldn't be surprised if windows phone would take over their number once windows 8 comes out if they do their move right.....

well bottom line....apple is way overpriced as a company and as a stock..... that stuff gonna go down in the next 10 years and it won't be pretty.... we'll see linux in every home before apple rules the world.... I have no doubt about it.....
