Forums - General Discussion - Canada to start using plastic money!

It's a great move... plastic money > paper money

Love the Aussie plastic money, makes life easier as they're far more durable. (And harder to counterfeit.)
Australia was also the first country with plastic bank notes, starting in 1988 with the $10 note.

I remember years ago, I used to always have a habit of leaving my money in my jeans and having it go through the wash... Then I had to chuck it in the oven to dry it out a bit.
Plastic... Just wipe and it's fine.

Plus... Our plastic notes are very colorful which is never a bad thing, helps people recognize the worth just from the colours, and the blind can "feel" the notes to see the value because of the indentations in the plastic window.

Apparently in a few years 10,20 and 5 dollar bills will likely follow making Canada the first country I know of to use plastic money.

Only off by over 20 years.

Australia invented the plastic polymer banknote technique in the 1980s. In fact, I think that they hold the rights to produce those same banknotes for other countries using the polymer notes, so unless there's a special agreement, the polymer banknotes will most likely be made in Australia.

Sounds awesome. But then money will lose its distinctive smell.

Good. I hear it's harmful.
