Forums - Gaming Discussion - Nintendo Wii U not a threat that requires PS4, says Tretton

I think both Sony and MS are ready to launch in 2013, if necessary. If they can wait longer, they could either cut the launch price or beef up some components in a way that doesn't require devs to rewrite the games already in development but give more max power, lengthening next consoles lifespan or both. What Tretton said is quite normal PR stuff, anyway, and it's also true that even if Wii U turned out being actually a threat, rushing PS4 (or XB720 in MS case) release for that would be a bad mistake.

This guy talks alot of junk and loses, how does that work? Nintendo started the next gen with the 3ds and wiiU and i dont see how someone can say they didnt. and nintendo was doing motion controls with the wiimote a while before move so this guy needs to think before he says welcome.

As for the bolded, he won't believe that. He's doing his job, trying to make the PS3 seem more 'current' than it really is.

Well I'm a ps3 owner and I agree really a ps3 owner should be happy with their ps3, but for me...an HD zelda sounds all to promising, so I'll most definitely get the wii u when it eventually comes out with a new zelda in awe inspiring HD

His comments are valid, Wii U at the moment does seem like a me too attempt by nintendo to finally go HD, Reggie said so himself in his WSJ video interview a few days ago. How can the Wii U be a threat to the PS3 or 360 when they are already HD and both will most likly have a price advantage.

And for the record talk out their asses all the time, Sony are not the only ones.

I think Both MS and Sony are holding out until even higher end components/newer technologies are cheap enough (and milk profits for as long as they can).

If they are going to make a console different enough to make people want to upgrade, they are going to have to wait so they can afford to price it under $400, because they won't take a huge loss lead like last time.

I could see both MS and Sony waiting till about 2015 to launch a new console. By then, the PS3 and 360 will both probably be around $149 and continue to sell after the new console launches at around $399.

What I should have said was 'I can't see enough PS3 owners migrating to the Wii U to justify a new console release.'

Very true then, but still I want an HD zelda!

With Sony is always the same thing... bashes Nintendo and in the end of the day they are the first ones to copy cat Nintendo doings. "So you copied Nintendo?" Sony's Answer: "Oh no we were thinking about this since the first Playstation..."

About Microsoft i dont know what they will do, besides the graphics update maybe enhance kinect for the next console. But Sony is just doing what they always do, they are waiting to see what Nintendo comes up and then they try to integrate that in the dualshock. It's crystal clear that the next dual shock will have a lcd screen... but they don't know yet what to do with it and that's why Nintendo was smart enough to show nothing in concrete in E3 2011. If they can't see it they can't copy it... at least so soon. Next year E3 will show Wii U at full steam and everything that Microsoft and Sony will try to do will be too late.Unless they launch a rushed device like Sony did with the failed SixAxis.

About the Wii U not being a next gen console... for the people who say that ,well many of you said that Wii wasn't
a next gen console because it was inferior to X360 and PS3 in graphics, well Wii U has a much better hardware than X360 and PS3 (rumors say the GPU alone is 4x better than current HD consoles besides other things), which means (according to your line of though) that X360 and PS3 are a generation below Wii U, so what is your excuse now?

Was the Dreamcast not a 128 bit console because it was, in terms of hardware, inferior to PS2, Gamecube and Xbox?
Was the PS2 not a 128 bit console because it was inferior, in terms of hardware, to Gamecube and Xbox?
Was the Gamecube not a 128 bit console because it was inferior, in terms of hardware, to Xbox?

PS1: The lasted thing Sony copied from Nintendo was the street pass feature that now on Vita it's called "Near". It's funny how almost everybody talked about it has being a new thing that no one ever had do it...how people forget so easily....

PS2: You can report my post to the admins but everything that i said is true.

Nintendo Wii was not a threat either and sold (30)thirty million (+)plus consoles more than Playstation 3. And Sony knew that the Nintendo Wii was a threat and is why they copied the Wii remote. I can't help myself but laugh to hear Sony say the Wii-U is not a threat that require a Playstation 4. But I know that they want to milk the PS3 to get back lost revenue from its launch.

""PlayStation 3 is really just hitting its stride. And technologically, I don't think it's possible to provide any advancement beyond what we have,""

I guess that he has price in mind when saying that. After 5 years of reducing manufacturing cost of PS3 they still dont offer it below 299$. At the moment, It would probably cost around 350$ for another company to manufacture a PS3. If I were Jack I would still be a bit cautious with statement like those, even if its not like them, Nintendo might sell below cost.

P.S.: gaming on 2000$ high end PC isnt THAT better looking then PS360, it does run flawlessly though. I do agree respectable PR shouldnt speak like this, but most of what he says does reflect the reality. I already knew neither Microsoft or Sony needed a new console.
