Forums - Sales Discussion - Going Multiplat - FAIL EDITION

I am of the opinion that Ninja Theory likely would've been in a better position had they stuck with Sony and worked on a Heavenly Sword 2, but I disagree with your other example, and cases like Ninja Theory are certainly a rare exception.

The only reason heavenly sword sold 1.5 mil is because there was nothing else on the ps3 at that time. There were *literally* only two games. Resistance and Heavenly sword. If they released heavenly sword ps3 exclusive right now it would sell similar to enslaved.

Look at resistance. It sold like crazy only because it was the only thing out. On the next iteration it sales were halved.

Look at Lost Planet. It sold pretty well on the first then fell flat on the second.

Those games are one hit wonders and nothing more.

Tekken 6 isn't going to be the worst selling Tekken when all is said and done, either. Here's the list of the best selling Tekken games

Tekken 3 - 6.91 million
Tekken 2 - 5.45 million

 Tekken: Tag - 3.94 million
Tekken 5 - 3.66 million
Tekken 4 - 3.31 million
Tekken - 3.18 million
Tekken 6 - 3.16 million

Now, in the past 12 weeks, the Tekken 6 editions have sold the following:

Ps3 version: 60k
X360 version: 16k
PsP version: 7k
Sum: 73k

Now, considering that it has sold 73k in from week 72 to week 84, selling another 500k isn't out of the question. Another 200k is a certainty. In other words, Tekken 6 is looking to end up selling pretty much exactly as much as the average of the Playstation 2 Tekkens.

It hasn't really failed at all.

yep its selling on par with the ps2 tekkens, though for some reason wikipedia says tekken 5 did 6 million which i cant believe lol. But tekken unlike any other fighting game always sells good.

Also Harada said on twitter last month that tekken 6 had sold 3.5 million so im thinking somethings a bit under-tracked.

Yeah, bulletstorm is a good example.

In all seriousness, I dunno whether to laugh or despair. This thread is just O-o... are you being sarcastic?

Talk about cherry picking, and even then two of your examples are fundamentally flawed... you realise Enslaved and LA Noire both sold more on 360 than PS3, right? Are you arguing that they would've sold more on PS3 as an exclusive than on PS360 combined as a multiplat?

Same question for the other two examples - Final Fantasy XIII and Tekken 6. Do you honestly think they would've sold an extra 1.8 million and 1 million, respectively, had they been PS3 exclusives?

Are there really that many PS3 owners who will only ever buy a game if it's exclusive?

Perhaps you ought to look at the sales for multiplat titles sometime. The 360 versions almost always sell more unless the game is either 1) a fighter (360's D-pad is so dire), or 2) has a strong Japanese following (where 360 has minimal presence). Using the (ridiculously flawed) logic in the OP you could make a stellar argument for everything besides games falling into either of those categories being 360 exclusive.

I noticed he did not really do his research on competition (aka the opposite perception) from two of his thread creations now. Honestly thanks for making such a statement early, because typically this goes on longer and people start fighting.

@Madd, Ya looks like the tekken series will settle around 3-4 million now.

you are a fanboy , actually many devs have a very hard time programming for the PS3 cos is hard to put games on that hardware , bayonetta actually was delay 4 months just because the ps3 version have problems and many others games have the same issue , just look many interviews on devs about programming for PS3

Reported for Flaming

You do realize you are proving his point by suggesting that the Bayonetta devs should have been exclusive to the X360

Are you serious!?

Why are there so many over-sensitive, whiney people on this site!?

Seriously not cool.

Moderated.

I don't know what other forums you hail from, but calling someone a fanboy is unacceptable.

This thread blows more than Mass Effect 2.

Above: still the best game of the year.

Maybe a better example is De Blob 2. De Blob 1 for Wii sold very good and was only on the Wii.

The Blob 2 sold bad, but still sold the best on Wii. It would have been much cheaper without the HD versions and would maybe sold a lot more.

heavenly sword sold so well due to being bundled and being one of the first ps3 exclusives as others have said.
Comparing it to Enslaved is invalid. Just like Lost Planet(when it was a 360 exclusive) outsold lost planet 2. Lost planet 2 wouldn't have magically sold better had it been exclusive. The original, like heavenly sword, had very little competition compared to what games have to deal with nowadays.

The tekken 6 example is invalid as well. Tekken 6 will reach at least 3.8mil sold lifetime and be one of the best selling tekken titles. Pretty good considering the amount of competition there is between fighting games nowadays and it being considered quite the bad. Being released earlier as a ps3 exclusive wouldn't have magically made it not a bad fight game.

This theory you seem to think exists might ONLY work with extremely niche titles that sell under 500k, where its possible that most of the fans of the game are the type of people that will only buy a game if its exclusive.

FFXIII = Over 6 million sold, 4th best selling FF according to VGC
Tekken 6 = Over 3.5 million sold, sales on par with PS2 outings.
Enslaved = 1 million targeted, 0.8 million sold, so not the flop you claim

This thread = FAIL

Yeah one hugh problem with your debate is your comparing games to franchises that have had time to sell. Tekken six may not have sold as much as tekken 5 so far but tekken 5 sales are over a number of years. When this generation is over Tekken 6 might reach a sales target of previous titles. The same with Heavanly sword. It released 3 or 4 years ago and now sits at 1.5 mil while Enslaved came out at christmas. In 3 years that could do 2.5 mil combined.

However I do believe some games should stay exclusives because exclusives get put in a higher grade than multiplats.
